Did you know : lion dancing in Vietnam is a mix of martial arts and folk dancing. The performers must practice tremendously in order to fulfill their targets. As a tradition, they often perform at Lunar New Year celebrations. I think their dedication and bravery make them perfect demonstrators for how the lunar new year should be. Full of energy

My father often says: "It's a blessing and a privilege that I have my wife and my best friend to build the THP legacy with me". Three decades later, they are still full of fighting spirit the same way they were on Day 1, marching forward together

Those who have worked with THP can tell that my sister, B**h takes a lot after our father, Dr Thanh. She is determined, fearless and a forward-thinking leader. Many siblings struggle to work and lead together in a family business because familial and professional boundaries are often blurred. However, we have put effort into learning how to communicate. For example, giving professional feedback to each other and drawing boundaries between feelings from the workplace and from home. It is not easy but if harnessed correctly, working and leading with siblings is a gift

Leverage your strengths to make an impact
When I graduated from university, I was torn between starting out on my own to prove myself to my father and joining the family business. I wanted to break out of Dr Thanh's shadow. Yet I soon realized that it is much more important to elevate a foundation which has been built and strengthened by my parents to create more values and impact's on society. If you know you're putting forward your best efforts everyday, don't let anything including your privileges make you feel less deserving. If your circumstances put you near the finish line, expand the distance and elevate the playground to include more of others. Let us thrive

John Maxwell said "A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way". One does not need to have a title to be a leader. One can practice leadership regardless of their positions in the organization. At THP, our employees, starting from entry-levels, are trained to develop their competencies through leading themselves then others

Great leaders possess a future-orientation that allows them to seek out opportunities with a positive attitude rather than focusing on difficulties, which is a past orientation

The writing of "Competing with Giants" has allowed me to learn a great deal about entrepreneurs' fighting spirit and the importance of vision. Why did our family not cash in the $2.5 billion offer? Because we simply believe that we can and need to do more for national brand development. Without being steadfast to our vision, we would certainly lose our footing as soon as an easier path appears

What have you been doing to close the "joy gap" at work? How do you help your employees feel that they are doing meaningful work. Creating workplace fulfillment needs to stem from addressing their needs as human beings first and corporate warriors second

What propels THP forward is sharing culture of leadership, integrity, commitment and talent. On that foundation we can build a global business that creates wealth, enhances our family’s reputation and makes a positive impact on society

Training is one of the key themes in my book "Competing with Giants".

I think that one of THP’s key differentiators is how we define training. Yes, it is partly about teaching the mechanics of how to undertake different job functions. But the thread, which runs through all our training programs, is the core values that we are instilling at the same time. Energy is the life force, or qi in Asian cultures, that literally keeps each of us alive. And we all know that people who exude positive energy are healthier and happier too: they live longer and they are the kind of people that we want to be around.

It is just the same for companies. Those that develop positive energy last longer and attract like-minded people to work there and stay there

As a female leader, there is tremendous pressure to prove oneself constantly. Most of the time, the pressure comes from various aspects and isn't limited to just our career and leadership position. How does one maintain positivity and confidence? I do not think there is a cookie cutter solution that works for every woman. What has worked very well for me is drawing power from what excites me. Focus my positive energy on that and keep everything else in the background. Leave out the noise and lean into your passion

If there is one "Word of the year” in 2022 , it has to be the word "transition" for me. So many lessons learned and milestones achieved. I have put it into words at phuonguyentran.com/latest-thinking. 2023 is shaping up to be a year where there will be a lot of favourable and unfavourable conditions for transformation alike. Once again, nothing reveals potentials like a challenge

THP has started to receive requests for field visits from MBA programs again after a long disruption due to the pandemic. THP is excited to continue our journey of sharing and learning together. The excitement is certainly getting to me as well. It's been a while since my last overseas book tour and speaking engagement. When I resume, where should be the next locations? Feel free to give suggestions in the comment

One of my favourite colours is yellow. Not only it is a bright and happy colour but it is a symbol of positive energy. Our top selling energy drink brand, Number 1 also dons bright yellow packaging. It is a colour synonymous with our “Nothing is Impossible" spirit. "Nothing is Impossible" is also one of the seven core values that THP upholds since our start in 1994. To learn more about our and spirit, which has led us into the billion-dollar company it is today, feel free to subscribe to phuonguyentran.com/latest-thinking

Vending machine prototype at THP is quite an exciting addition for our visitors. I don't think I made the cut as the poster girl though. What do you think 😄?

When we were children, we often idolize our parents. I felt as if sometimes they must be some sorts of non-human super beings. As we grow older, we grow out of admiring our parents in such way. But to me, my father is still my hero where I draw my inspiration and wisdom

If you are Vietnamese and you have read "Chuyện Nhà Dr Thanh" (Story of Dr Thanh's family), you would understand the endless admiration I have for my mother. Born of humble origin, she was a very intelligent young woman but her financial circumstances did not allow her to go to university. She started helping out the family in the sugar trading business. She was often praised for her business acumen and work ethics, not to mention widely admired for her grace and beauty. She even helped with the delivery physically carrying bags of sugar from the truck to the customers' homes. Her total daily delivery was often around 5 tons. My mother is very petite but she is certainly an ironwoman in many ways

Love & Partnership, still as strong as Day 1

So that as two friends you can enjoy life together"

"To know what you know and what you do not know, that is true knowledge". THP has a fervent belief in continuous learning. My sister loves books and their vast offerings of distilled knowledge. My father is a firm believer in learning through application. In our nuclear family and the extended THP family, you will find that everyone is encouraged to ask questions and stay curious in everything that we do. That is our basis for continuous improvement as well

THP has been awarded National Brand recognitions for the past 14 years. We are very proud of this achievement. Started as a very modest local brewery in 1994, THP has always reached for the stars in all aspects. When we identified an opportunity to transition from beer to good-for-health non-alcoholic ready-to-drink beverages, we gave our full commitment. That means high standards and process excellence to build brands which continually contribute to our nation's rising living standards. By 2030, Vietnam Value will aim to have 1000 National Brands. THP is excited to remain part of this prestigious group and looks forward to create more National Brands

Vietnamese Lunar New Year also known as Tết is finally here. It is the biggest holiday in the country. If you can imagine Christmas and New Year combined into one holiday, that'd be how significant our Tết is. It's a very special occasion which marks the new year in a calendar which follows the moon cycle. There is a whole week of public holidays but many take as many as two weeks off to travel back to their hometowns, their heritage roots to celebrate with their loved ones. Extended families, close friends, colleagues pay visits to wish each other good health, joy and prosperity. For our family, it's an opportunity to spend time and celebrate the new year with the whole . Joy is multiplied exponentially when shared

In Vietnamese, the word "inheritance" (thừa kế) and "succession" (kế thừa) are almost identical. People often think they have the same meaning. To me, they could not be more different. To inherit something, it requires very little effort. You are just receiving what's left for you. However, succession means tremendous preparation for the legacy your family wants to build. You have to hone your skills as a leader. That often means learning to give, to be of service. For close to two decades, it's a very challenging assignment but it's been an incredibly meaningful and rewarding journey

Listening is an essential skill for a leader. To listen, one needs to practice silence and focus consciously. Too often we listen to others through our own filters and interpretation and fail to hear the speaker's true intention. But if we want to be heard, we need to be able to hear others as well
