After three rounds slammed his ceramic SAPI plate and threw him to the ground, Lance Corporal Jeffrey Cole got up, grabbed the M240B off another wounded Marine, and fired at the enemy only 30 meters away until he was shot three times.

On August 17, 2010, LCpl Cole served as a machine gunner with Echo Company, 2/9 in Marjah, Afghanistan. His patrol came under fire from 20 Taliban less than 50 meters away. Five Marines went down immediately. LCpl Cole took a three-round burst to his chest, lifting him off the ground. When he realized he was unharmed, he gave his rifle to the wounded Marine next to him and took his machine gun. LCpl Cole stood in the open and fired over 150 rounds before three more rounds ripped into him. The first was stopped by his SAPI plate again. The next two shredded his left arm. As other Marines placed a tourniquet on him, Cole continued suppressing the enemy. When a British CH-46 finally arrived for medevac, Cole continued firing until all other casualties were loaded.
Once back in the states, doctors managed to save Cole's arm by an experimental nerve graft. Two years later, he received the Silver Star.
