The Africa Project - Wezesha Dada Kenya
🌍 A Wragby-based community group with the aim to empower girls in Africa. ❣️
Welcome to The Africa Project! 👋 We are a community group who meet every Thursday morning 10-12 at The Adam and Eve, Wragby and create reusable sanitary towels and nappies to send over to girls, women and mothers in Kenya. On average, girls in Kenya miss one week of school every month because they do not have access to sanitary towels. We want to change that! 👊 Wazesha Dada translates, literally, to 'Empowering Girls' which is the primary aim of our mission. ♀
Come join us - all are welcome!
Another lovely morning of coffee and chatter (and hard work of course!) at The Africa Project! 😁☕️
Come join us every Thursday 10-12 at The Adam and Eve, Wragby - all are welcome.
Another productive Thursday for the Africa Project! 😁✅
Come join us every Thursday at The Adam and Eve, Wragby 10am-12noon to help make reusable sanitary towels and nappies to send to women, girls, mothers and babies in Africa.🧵🪡 No sewing experience necessary; we need draw-arounders, cut-arounders, and sorter-outers too!
We got this lovely write up in the monthly WI Newsletter about our visit with the East Barkwith & District WI - thanks for having us ladies! 🥰
Proudly showing off today’s work… At just 8 years old, Thea is already trained up on the sewing machine! 😮
Very impressive, don’t ya think?! 😁
Pop along to today's market stall to find lots of beautiful handmade goods! 🧶😍✨
This week we'd like to share a tribute to Joan Leader - an incredible lady and integral part of our project since its inception.
Joan is pictured here on the far left hard at work at our sister project in Leicester and working her magic sewing our sanitary towels together at The Adam and Eve, Wragby (each one made with lots of love and laughter at every session! 😊).
Her big heart, fiery spirit and mean sense of humour will be sorely missed. Our team has lost a piece of its heart but you've sure left your stamp on us - thanks for everything Joan! ❤️ All our love, light and strength to Joan's family. # # #
How talented are our ladies? 🤩🤩🤩 Take a look at the prototype for our new reusable adjustable nappies!
We're on a roll this week... We've recruited another sewer!!!!! 🤩🪡🧵🎉 And, we've finally been promoted to nappies! 🧷🚼
Watch this space...
Not only does our project aim to empower women and girls in Kenya but it also has the added benefit of bringing people together...
Having your own community brings a sense of belonging and connection that is good for the soul - never underestimate its importance!🫂 🙌 💓
Fab turn out today - all systems go! 😁
The mountain of materials and finished products we were tasked with sorting through yesterday! 😱
‼️ We still need: ‼️
- VOLUNTEERS
- Your unwanted sewing machines
- Waterproof fabrics (eg. shower curtains, old tents, etc)
- Towelling (bath towels but not tea towels please)
- Old coloured flannelette bed sheets or coloured t-shirts
- Old patterned duvets
- Thread
Head over to our page and see our pinned post for more details. 😁

Another part of our mission is to enable the communities in Africa to be able to reproduce what we make themselves.
In order to do this we need your 🧵UNWANTED SEWING MACHINES🧵.
As we will be sending these across the world they preferably need to be lightweight in order to make the most of the cost of shipping. If you have one you could donate, please contact the page with a photo of your machine so that we can ensure it's suitable! ⚠️ Please do NOT bring your machines to the pub for donation as we do not currently have anywhere to store them, we will organise collection once we have confirmed shipping. ⚠️
If we are able to produce the funds, we may be able to take in old heavier sewing machines to ship over at a later date.
If you are interested in the project, please join us! 😁 You don't have to be a talented sewer to join in; if you are able to draw around things and cut out shapes then we have a job for you. Pop in for a coffee and a chat - the warmest of welcomes is awaiting you! ☕️ If you struggle to get out or prefer to sew at home, please get in touch as we'd be more than happy for you to do this.
THANK YOU 🙌
