With one in three initial assessment appointments missed at Community Mental Health and Wellbeing Team (CMHT) appointments, we are going to be working on a collaborative project with NHS Highland to better understand the reasons behind those statistics.
With the support of Inclusion Scotland’s We Can Work Internship Programme, we are delighted to offer someone with lived experience the opportunity to become a paid Peer Project Intern.
The Peer Project Intern will lead the “Community Experience Matters” project, which aims to reduce missed appointments at Community Mental Health Teams (CMHT). Responsibilities include engaging with people accessing or requiring services and NHS staff to identify and implement solutions, focusing on CMHT’s services in Badenoch, Strathspey, and Nairnshire.
This role offers development in lived experience leadership, project management, community engagement, and collective advocacy.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Breast cancer is the most common cancer for women, with 1 in 8 women in Scotland developing the disease at some point during their lifetime. Evidence shows that routine screening in those between the ages of 50 and 70 is the best way to detect cancer early. Those who are aged 71-74 (up until your 75th birthday) and those who have previously had breast cancer and have been discharged from yearly follow up mammograms are welcome to remain in the screening programme but are not automatically invited and are required to make their appointments through the screening centre.
Breast screening can detect tiny cancers when they are often less advanced and easier to treat.
The most recent figures on annual uptake show that 23.2% of eligible women in NHS Highland area are not attending their screening invitation.

Looking after ourselves is important however being there for others is also key to a balanced life. There are lots of people in our communities who are just looking for a wee bit of your time so that they don’t feel so alone. People who volunteer for this role always say they get so much joy from supporting others and are delighted they can fit visits in without feeling overstretch. Why not get in touch to book your place and find out if this is a role that would suit you. 😀

Do you know someone who would benefit from a break like this?
VOCAL Midlothian has a small number of three-night breaks available at Hawthorne Brae Cottage in Blair Atholl. The cottage is situated in a beautiful rural location in Perthshire and sleeps up to six people. The breaks on offer will be weekend and mid-week and available in late November and early December 2022.
The focus of these breaks will be on improving health and well-being. We are particularly keen to hear from carers who may be experiencing a difficult time and have not benefited from VOCAL’s Wee Breaks programme within the past twelve months.
These breaks are limited, so priority will be given to those carers who have not benefited from Wee Breaks support previously.
To find out more about the breaks available or to request a break, please visit our Wee Breaks website: https://weebreaks.com/event/perthshire-cottage-breaks/
Well put Heather, this is a fabulous description of the need to really take the time to understand what's important to people. Values and attitudes play a very important part.
All too often there are low expectations about what people with disabilities can do, learn or achieve. This can be particularly true where someone doesn't use speech to communicate.
Do you support people living with long-term conditions who want to continue working but are facing challenges or barriers to this? If so, this study by Researchers from Aberdeen University may be of interest to you. They are looking for people to take part in a focus group, see the flyer below for more information.
Should make for interesting reading
Homepage | Scottish Mental Health Law Review The final report of the Scottish Mental Health Law Review represents the product of over three years work in the first major review of mental health and capacity law in Scotland in over 20 years. It includes direct quotes from many of the voices of lived experience (including unpaid carers) as well....
Definitely food for thought. However well intentioned it is easy to perpetuate segregation by assuming that people who share one issue e.g. loneliness, mental or physical health issues, age etc. will naturally want to spend time together.
The way that services are accessed or funded can also feed into this as 'gatekeeping' and eligibility is often targeted at people that fit into particular groups. We can only hope to change this if we move away from systems focussed on deficits to one that encourages and supports individuals and communities to recognise, value and build on their skills, connections and resources.
What a brilliant idea

The Herbert Protocol has been designed to help the police find a vulnerable person e.g. someone with dementia quickly and safely if they go missing. Families are asked to download the Herbert Protocol form and provide information such as places of importance to them, often visited places, health issues and places they have been found in the past if reported missing. The form also asks for details such as what the person was wearing when last seen, whether they have a mobile phone with them at the point when the missing person report is being made.
A real benefit of this process is that it provides an opportunity for families, with input from the person, to pull together the bulk of information in advance rather than at a point of crisis. This will help to ensure the person is found quickly and safely.
We want to help keep vulnerable people with as safe as possible, so we're showing support for 's national implementation of the . You can download a protocol form on their website👉 http://ow.ly/bRpD50GbdF1
