Most of us have harsh inner critics who judge us, put us down, and punish us when we make mistakes. If you practise self-compassion regularly, especially when you’re feeling remorseful, you'll learn to keep under control your inner critic. As a result, you’ll discover that you already have a gentler and more nurturing force inside you — one that can keep you aligned with your highest self 💜
Hope to see you there! https://zurl.co/6WMe
The more detail you go into when having a painful (angry, fearful etc) thought the more you get trapped by it. Try noting the thought and allowing it to pass while you focus on what you need to do next about the issue or about something else in your life.
Daily Bell, the devil in the detail + Weekend Video ... you have given a light at the end of a long tunnel. W.G. I'd like you to know that today's Bell was just what was needed in my world. R.R. I so appreciate your work. I look for your notes more consistently than almost any other of the many in every inbox. M.C.
Take a minute or two to bring your awareness to your breathing. You can do this in any way you prefer (my own preferance is to notice my breath at the entrance to my nostrils.)
As you try to be aware of your breathing, you will find that your mind will drift many times.
Say 'thinking' with compassion towards yourself and without in any way criticising yourself for your mind wandering, and bring your attention back to your breathing.
Learn what self-compassion is and how to cultivate it at my one-hour Zoom Event on Wednesday 13 November: https://zurl.co/wyoX
“We live immersed in a world of constant doing. Rarely are we in touch with ... the world of being. To get back in touch with being is not that difficult. We only need to remind ourselves to be mindful. Moments of mindfulness are moments of peace and stillness, even in the midst of activity." Jon Kabat-Zinn, Full Catastrophe Living.

‘Savouring’ is an often-neglected mindfulness practice. It means slowing down to appreciate or ‘savour’ something positive, such as something in nature, art or perhaps a pleasant emotion or taste. In times of crisis and heightened uncertainty it can bring minutes of calm into the day.

Embracing life with a playful approach is an essential aspect of mindfulness. When we can laugh at life's absurdities and our own quirks, we tap into an inner resilience that helps us deal with challenges more gracefully.

Your day probably includes events or situations you don’t like. But what’s in the day that you like? This isn’t about blanking out unpleasant events. But what you like deserves its place in your awareness too. That awareness can lighten the load.

"Happiness is nothing more than good health and a bad memory." So Albert Schweitzer is said to have said. A too-good memory for what you resent or regret but can’t fix any longer is a curse. Try to get better at forgetting by directing your attention to the here and now.

Why are we much nicer to other people than to ourselves? When we’re self-critical, our inner voice is always cutting us down. That undermines our ability to be happy.
Everyone needs self-compassion in order to cope with their own pain, however slight or severe it may be. Fortunately, we can learn to have greater compassion for ourselves.

Most of us have unresolved issues from the past – hurts, injustices, losses, things we did that we wish we hadn’t done, things we didn’t do that we wish we had done and so on.
If we get locked into thinking over and over about these various issues, this can rob us of our experience of the present and of our involvement with life as it is now.
It’s important to remind ourselves to come into awareness of the present moment when we find ourselves lost in these ruminations. My online course Easy Mindfulness can help you to live more in the present. https://zurl.co/q2mJ
Cultivating awareness of what’s going on in the moment as you move through the day can help you feel better because you get less caught up in negativity. This simple way to improve your experience of living costs nothing except the willingness to keep coming back to the moment whenever you find you’ve drifted away.

Our heads are noisy places. We're regularly juggling work issues, family schedules, and life in general. Mentally shutting off all that can be hard.
Mindfulness can help you to quiet your mind and sit in silence. This is important because of the tendency of the mind to wander into memories, worries and other distractions.

"I forgot that every little action of the common day makes or unmakes character," Oscar Wilde wrote in De Profundis while in prison. I mightn’t hold Oscar up as a mindfulness guru but that’s a very mindful statement worth pondering.

How often do you actively think kind thoughts about yourself? It could make a big difference in both your physical and mental health.
Let go of your critical inner voice – We all have negative thoughts every now and then, but it’s important that we learn to accept them and let go of them without taking them too personally or clinging to them.
Make self-compassion a part of your daily routine with the 15-lesson True Friend online course. https://zurl.co/thFd
We exaggerate negative thoughts: things are ‘disastrous’ when they are just disappointing or ‘unacceptable’ when they are just annoying. When you notice this thinking, correct it and bring your awareness to the reality of the moment.

The ability to inspire mindfulness and bring a sense of peace is just one reason why being outdoors in nature is also called a “miracle medicine” for your brain.
Just a gentle 15-minute walk in your local park can make you feel better.
This Spring, pick an activity that suits your pace or challenge yourself and watch your mood and your health improve 😊

"Focusing on physical sensations of anxiety, like a tense stomach or tight chest, helps reduce tension. By calmly observing these feelings, you’ll notice the levels of tension change. Breathing long out-breaths activates the calming part of your nervous system" (from my book Acceptance - create change and move forward).https://mailchi.mp/padraigomorain/daily-bell-a-way-to-look-at-anxiety-weekend-video

Be your own friend, no matter what: When you get up each morning, make a silent pledge to yourself that you will still be your own friend at the end of the day, whatever it may bring. That 'whatever' may include success or suffering or both. But know that you can rely on your own friendship, no matter what. (from my book Daily Calm.)

If you are happy right now or if you experience happy moments later today or tomorrow, be alert to the presence of happiness and give it a warm welcome. By coming into the appreciation of positivity in this way, you are more likely to recognise happiness when it visits.

One of the great mysteries of human life is a tendency to expect perfection from ourselves while, at the same time, knowing that human beings are just not perfect.’ From my book Daily Calm. It’s an expectation that brings much unhappiness and we owe it to ourselves to challenge it.
