A little adult fun tonight in the Villages.

Downtown Conway, SC has been turned into "Halloween Town" Visiting Myrtle Beach? Make your way to Conway. These are some of the parts of the town. There is such more to see and do here. There plenty of really great places to grab a bite to eat to.

A very rare find on Myrtle Beach, my mother. She's traveling with us to Florida and has not been to the ocean in about 40 years. As a matter of fact anywhere, really.
Don't put off traveling and say next year or I don't have the money. Before you know it, a lot of time will have passed you by.

Traveling with our cat has been a little different, bringing back some memories of 22 years ago when we first started traveling with our son. She doesn't care for her back pack and would rather either lay in her litter box or on her blanket. My mom is sitting in the back with her. She loves the hotel rooms and is very curious. Watching out the window of the hotel rooms seems to be a good past time for her. 😃

The views along the way have been beautiful. This is a great time to travel. The color of the hillside are constantly changing, but I am even more aware of why the northeast is such a destination for leaf peepers.

We stopped in Grantville, PA just outside of Hershey. As usual we made a donation to the Hollywood Casino. We grabbed some grub at the Saloon that is located in the Holiday Inn Hotel. Mom and I really liked our sandwiches. David had meatloaf. I would recommend eating there for sure.
Lastnight it was Kernersville, NC and a fight for a hotel room. We were competing with the "Furniture Market" High Point Market (formerly the International Home Furnishings Market and the Southern Furniture Market), held in High Point, North Carolina, is the largest home furnishings industry trade show in the world, with over 11 million square feet (1 km2) and about 2,000 exhibitors throughout about 180 buildings. The market holds two major shows each year in April and October, and attracts between 70,000 and 80,000 attendees. The High Point Market Authority coordinates the exposition, whose showrooms have nearly completely filled what had been the historic downtown. Source for the previous info. Wikipedia
Next stop Myrtle Beach, SC

A quick overnight in Grantville, PA. It's the perfect location if your looking to visit Hershy. Prices are way cheaper and Hershy is only 20 min. away.
Isn't this wall fun?

How could this happen? I never posted our last couple of days of our trip to Alaska & VanCouver so here they are.....
We dropped our luggage off at the concierge at the hotel in Canada Place. We walked through the lower level of the VanCouver Convention Center West and checked out a few pieces from the 2010 Olympics. From there we hopped onboard the Sea Bus (ferry boat) and took it across the Bay to North VanCouver. Once crossing, looking back across the bay was very beautiful. There were 3 cruise ships in port including the one we just had gotten off 2 or 3 hours prior. For only $3 each, one way. It was worth it. While we visited North VanCouver city right after we got off the Sea bus we walked around the old ship yard that now has restaurants and shops. Very artsy. We walked into the city further and decided that when we go back we will spend more time there, maybe even stay there. The Sea Bus ride is so inexpensive and quick. They have a public transportation pass that works for all of their different types transportation. "Compass" is the name of the pass. I strongly suggest looking into it if you will be visiting for a few days or more. Once back across the harbour we grabbed some last minutes gifts, grabbed our luggage, hired an Uber and set out for our airbnb just outside of Chinatown. We walked the streets for a little bit, went grocery shopping and David made us dinner. 😃🏋‍♀️
We got up the next morning in the dreary chilly weather walked a few blocks to Canada Place and hopped aboard the FREE shuttle to the Capilano Suspension Bridge.
So let's talk about this thing. First off, fear of heights, well.... Thrill seekers, it's good. The Capilano Suspension Bridge; They have had guests from every single country in the world visit the 450 ft (137 m) long Bridge. If you took the Statue of Liberty and stood her in the Capilano river below, the bridge would come to her shoulders! 🥴 That's 230 ft (70m) up on this wobbly wooden planked bridge. As they say on their website the reassuringly wobbly, delicate looking bridge can hold a fully loaded 747 airliner or 75 fully grown elephants. Click on the link for some interesting history about the bridge. I find the "time line" most interesting. https://www.capbridge.com/our-story/
Ok. So the bridge for me was well, let's say this, my heart was beating fast. The height was not too bad, I guess, but then when you add the movement of the bridge, it changes everything. 😉 getting to the other side just brought more adventure. The Treetops Adventure; There are several Suspension bridges all over connecting the treetops that you can walk on. Not as far up, but still a good time for sure. The serenity of being in the rainforest up in the trees is fantastic. We walked through the Living Forest and Raptor's Ridge. All before heading back over the bridge to do the Cliffs Walk, another thrilling experience. I even walked out onto what was like a grate hanging off the cliff and about 30 storeys high. 🤢😵‍💫 honestly it was worse than the bridge! At least the cliff walk had solid wooden planks. This link gives you some fun facts. https://www.capbridge.com/experiences/cliffwalk/

After a gander around the gift shop and a bite to eat at "Loggers Grille" , I do need to point out that the prices are in the Canadian dollar and look high, but it is well worth it. A couple can share a meal.
We hopped back on the FREE shuttle bus and made our way back to the downtown. The Capilano Bridge would get a 10 out of 10 for places to visit for me. It is well kept, clean and well worth the money to visit. Plan on spending 4-5 hours if you want to really take your time and take it all in. 3 hours if you just want to walk through and take a quick look. It is only about 15 minutes from downtown and again has the free shuttle bus to get there. While over that way I would check out Grouse mountain, just up the road. Again there is a free shuttle. We did not go, but I would like to next time.

Back at our airbnb, not long after dropping our stuff off we were back out on the streets seeing the sights. This time of Chinatown. We didn't go far as it gets a little shady and the feeling of being unsafe. Just past the Chinatown gate is the Jack Chow building
world's skinniest commercial building with the ground floor coming in at a womping 4 ft 11 in (1.50 m) wide, and the 2nd floor spaning 6 feet (1.8 m) because of its overhanging bay windows. Additionally, a basement extends under the sidewalk adjacent to the storefront. 6 ft. (1.83m) wide.
Think about it this way. How tall are you? Is the building as wide as you are tall? If I were to lay down on the floor, I would not fit. 🤪😝 you have to click the link for a very quick read about why the building is so skinny. This guy was my kind of guy. The link itself is long sorry. 💛https://www.google.com/search?q=what+is+the+story+behind+the+kack+chow+building+in+vancouver%3F&oq=what+is+the+story+behind+the+kack+chow+building+in+vancouver%3F&gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUyBggAEEUYOTIHCAEQIRiPAjIHCAIQIRiPAtIBCTI0MjQ0ajBqN6gCFLACAQ&client=ms-android-verizon-us-rvc3&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8

Day 16 of "The 50th State Celebration Vacation"
Day 6 of the 2nd week of cruising
Today went back through the Inside Passage. The weather was not sunny and bright, but overcast which allowed us to enjoy the Inside Passage again. Way better than yesterday! We woke late. Like I mentioned before, we are out of practice from not traveling enough. 😉 we did a short workout, I grabbed a quick breakfast and went to the back stage tour. I enjoy learning about how it all works. After the tour and quickly made my way to a good spot to watch the International Parade of Flags. I love to learn how many crew members are from where. On this week's cruise we had 56 different nations taking care of us. Amazing how we can all get along with one another from all over the world! Over 800 crew member on board. I heard there were only 3,100 guests, but I can not say for certain.
After the parade I took the opportunity to speak with the captain while he was waiting for his coffee. He told me it was the first time in his career thay he has been that close to the Hubbard Glacier. He was also telling me that last night the winds got up to 90 knots, that's 103mph! The swells were not bad, just the wind. I am not sure about that number, but that's what he said. I can tell you the the ship was leaning quite a bit lastnight. It was the first time we experienced that. Anyways, back to the captain. Apparently the captain is not very friendly with crew either. I know he doesn't speak to the guests. Not only did I get him to talk with me, but I got a picture and a smile out of him. A crew member that has worked with him for years was sharing with me how rare that experience was. I guess I got lucky!
David spent some time in the casino, but not before packing. We had some lunch then I went back and packed.
CRUISE TIP: Don't wait until late the last night to pack. Pack as much as you can earlier on in the day. So you can ENJOY your last night on the ship.
We met for our last meal with some of our very favorite people. A very special shout out to Pratik, our headwaiter and our assistant waiter, Kaywana. They both love their jobs and made our time on board (for both weeks) so much fun. We had met them both on our 18 night cruise to Sydney Australia so catching up again was great! Amit (the specialty diet baker chef) made me the cherry roll thing 🍒. Again it was so good. I ate both pieces! 😋
After dinner we chatted with the photography crew as we usually did nightly and made our way to the farewell show. It was good as usual. Off to the casino to make one final donation and maybe a few drinks and a very late night.

Day 15 Of "The 50th State Celebration Vacation"
Day 5 of the 2nd week of cruising
Today turned out to be a SEA DAY our scheduled port was Ketchikan, but the weather did not cooperate. That's OK. Nothing was going to compare to the Glacier yesterday. So we just hung out around the ship. We enjoyed the company of our table mates for breakfast and lunch. We went to the Love and Marriage game show in the afternoon. It is very similar to the game show that was on TV years ago.
There are so many activities to have fun and enjoy all around the ship. We stopped and watched a few of the them.
Emily(the dance captain) joined us for dinner again lastnight. We really enjoy her company. She is towards the end of her contract and is eager to get off and be home with her parents. Who we met last week on board, they are also great people. After filling ourselves with some great chicken parmigiana (they made me my special one. It was very good!) we made our way to the Schnoorner Bar to listen to the classical Duo(piano and violin) from Ukrain. They play so lovely. I could listen all day. They too will be getting off soon, but for them it's L.A.
By 7:00 the winds were very strong. Captain said they could be up to 81 miles an hour (70 knots). The entire ship was leaning to one side for hours. We went back to the cabin very early. Setting our clocks ahead tonight, so we loose an hour. I stayed up and finished my book.

Day 14 of "The 50th State Celebration Vacation"
Day 5 of the 2nd week of the 2 week Cruise.
Today we did a galley tour. Special shout out to Lylle for getting us in. The Tour was quite good. We were there in between meals so not much action, but it was great seeing the kitchen and the massive volume of everything! After our tour we sat down to a great brunch. My chicken was amazing. Just as we completed the tour and were sitting down to eat we were approaching The Hubbord Glacier. It was breath taking. It didn't matter that the outside temperature was about 45°f (7°c) with no hat, gloves or coats. We just could not stop taking pictures of the beautiful view, the. Captain was able to get us very close, the closest they had been this whole itinerary according to the officers that I spoke with. The day was clear of clouds and the sun reflecting off the glacier and icebergs was fantastic! The captain get us in the bay for about 2 hours just turning the boat so that we could see the entire bay no matter where we were.

Let's talk about the HUBBARD GLACIER, named after Gardiner G. Hubbard in 1890, a founder of National Geographic and a financier for the exploration of the Yakutat Bay and the Hubbard Glacier by Israel Russell, founder of the glacier. The Glacier is 76 miles (122k) long, 7 miles (11k) wide and 1,200 feet (366m) at it's deepest, and 200-250 feet (61-76m) at it's calving terminus (the end or the part we are seeing). It is North America's tidewater glacier and the 2nd largest in the world, 2nd only to the Lambert Fisher Glacier in Antartica. The Hubbard Glacier has received its nickname "The Galloping Glacier" because it has been advancing (growing) for the last 100 years. The Glacier continues to grow due to the snow fall in the basin either melts or flows down to the terminus.
Now let's talk about the ICEBERGS from The Hubbard Glacier. The Glacier calves often with massive chunks of ice breaking off, we call these chunks icebergs. I did not see this happen today, but I am sure you have all seen it happening on TV or online at some point. It is not uncommon for icebergs from The Hubbard Glacier to be 3-4 stories tall.
To read more about the history of The Hubbard Glacier click on this link. https://drive.google.com/file/d/14Kv82tuGC9-0wHOLkAPeohcOR6aJCPb6/view?usp=drivesdk

The day was so beautiful!!! We went back to the cabin put some warmer clothes on and went back out to view the glacier. David made his way back inside. I just could not go back in so I sat in the sun and ended up taking a quick nap, then read my book for about an hour before we left the bay and it started get windy.
After dinner we went to the Production show: Center Stage. Emily and the entire cast did a fantastic job, as usual. We went to both shows we enjoyed it so much. Even though they do the same shows each week we went back to watch them they were so good! No casino tonight. Maybe tomorrow.

Day 13 of "The 50th State Celebration Vacation"
Day 4 of the 2nd week of cruising
Today we woke to clouds and rain, but when you travel to Alaska you can expect that. It slowed us down from going out, but it didn't stop us. We geared up and set out anyway.
We went to the visitor center, something we did not do that we usually do our first time we go to a new port.
TRAVEL TIP: Always check out the visitor center and ask a lot of questions. We discovered that we can hop on the public transit bus for $4 and go for about an hour and a half or so "tour" to places outside of downtown Juneau on bus #3 and @4 By taking bus #8 the express route from the Transit Center you can be at the Mendenhall Glacier in about 20 min. or so. Then pay only $5 to go to the Mendenhall Glacier.
We jumped off the bus to go to the grocery store to pick up some more candy and a few other things.
CANDY; It is not necessary, but we like to give candy to all of the crew members. From the crew that keep the ship clean to the officers wearing the stripes. The crew has told us like Werther's original, regular Tootsie Rolls, and chocolate.
After walking around to the shops and getting rained on and back on the ship it was time to change and head to dinner. It was extra special tonight, we had Emily, the dance captain join us. She is such a sweet young lady. It has been great getting to know her.
We had a couple of other special treats tonight. Chef, Amit, The young man who makes my desserts came out to our table again tonight. He was checking on my desserts to see if I was enjoying them. I had to take a picture 📸 with not only him, but with tonight's dessert as well. After dinner we went to see another headliner, Mark Preston, he used to sing with the Lettermans. The music was a little older, (I didn't know most of it) but he was a good entertainer.
After making our way to deck 13, Starquest, we joined in the fun of the silent dance party. It is quite funny and definitely entertaining. Wjat did you say? "What the heck ia a silent dance party? Let mw tell you! You wear a set of headphones provided by the ship. Each set of headphones has 2 channels. Each channel is playing a different song. So at any given time there are different songs being danced to and sometimes even sung. 🙉 🤣😂
We set out to win big in the casino after the dance party........ok, so not big, but David had begun winning back his losses. We stayed in the casino much later than usual because there was no way to walk away from the machine that was handing out some money.
Tomorrow, Hubbard Glacier

Day 12 of "The 50th State Celebration Celebration"
Day 3 of the 2nd week of cruising, Sitka.
The clocks were set back an hour and so that meant we were up early.
Our ship arrived early so we were able to get off early, but it still wasn't until 12:00. This afternoon for the first time while we were docking next to the RC Ovation of the Seas we saw the man raising the American flag on our ship.
We grabbed a quick bite at the Windjammer and set out for the free shuttle into town to set out for the Sitka National Park. We caught shots of Cresant Harbor on the way and passed the Sitka Sound Science Center. We did not visit. The cost to get in is $14 per person. They had a fish tank full of fish, so I had to grab a shot of the star fish.
As we arrived there was a very tall totem Pole to great us. We only walked through a small part of the park taking a few shots during the journey and not seeing a single bear 😞. One thing we knew we wanted to do besides walk in the park a little was to see all the salmon spawning in the river. And boy did we see some salmon! It was amazing and gross all in one. We stepped off the trail onto a path that was made down to the river. In September the chum salmon and the pink salmon will travel hundreds of miles back to their birth place in the Indian River to spawn.
Next stop The Alaska Raptor Centor. It is a quick 1/2 mile walk from the shuttle drop off. I suggest you walk instead of paying a company to bring you. The cost to get in was $16. David did not go in, just me. I would not recommend spending the money. The staff were just standing there. They were not explaining anything about the rehabilitation process of the birds that were there. There were a couple of Bald Eagles, a Golden Eagle, Red-Tailed Hawk, a great Grey Owl, and a Great Horned Owl. I was hoping so hard to see a brown bear fishing after the salmon, but that is only in the movies!
As we made our way back into the city we passed the Alaska National Cemetary and stopped at the Historoc Russian Bishop's House built in the mid 1800's. It was once a Russian Orphanage.
Last week in Sitka David found an ancient arcade from the 1980's in the old cinema, so we returned today to play the "old games". I did some shopping while David played and i found some Salmonberry sorbet (it does not taste like salmon despite the name. It tastes like berry)
Before leaving we grabbed a couple pics at the pier.
Once back onboard we had dinner, went to tonight's show in the theatre to see Scotty Cavanaugh (he is a comedic juggler) sat in the casino waiting for David's machine to become free, then went back to get some sleep for tomorrow's adventure, Juneau.

17/09/2024

Not only do we travel, we send birthday wishes, especially to our son Shawn! You have already made your mark in the world. 🩷

Day 9 of "The 50th State Celebration and Vacation"
Day 7 week #1 of the 2 week Cruise, Inside Passage.(day at sea) the clouds began to go away as the morning passed. By lunch it was absolutely beautiful.
Our day at sea was relaxing. We went back stage with dance captain and the theater Manager. I will post more about that next week. Watched the flag ceremony, a chance for us to see and find out the number of crew from each country on Board. The United States has 7 crew members representing. 52 nations in total work on board.
I spent time in the crown lounge enjoying the views. While David spent time at the casino.
We snapped some photos of our headwaiter Pratik, Waiter, Erwin, and our assistant waiter, Del. They were a great team.
After dinner we enjoyed the farewell show. Any spent the rest if the night in the casino chatting with our new friends Michelle and Scott from Australia. Tomorrow is turn around day.

Day 8 of "The 50th State Celebration Vacation"
Day 6, Tracy Arm Fjords and Sawyer Glacier week #1 of a 2 weeks Cruise.
We woke early as we entered the Fjords at 6:30am. Although there was some fog, clouds, rain, and of course it was SO Cold 🥶 it was amazing. The views were beautiful. Waterfalls, mountains, icebergs, and of course the Sawyer Glacier. I have no words to express how breath taking it was. Unfortunately/fortunately there were several icebergs which makes it impossible for the ship to get too close. We still were able to see the Glacier. Seeing all of the icebergs was pretty cool.
Tracy Arm is a fjord in the U.S. state of Alaska near Juneau. Tracy Arm-Fords Terror Wilderness contains 653,179 acres (2,643.32 km²) and consists of two deep and narrow fjords: Tracy Arm and Endicott Arm. Both fjords are over 30 miles (48 km) long and one-fifth of their area is covered in ice. During the summer, the fjords have considerable floating ice ranging from hand-sized to pieces as large as a three-story building During the most recent glaciated period, both fjords were filled with active glaciers. But what exactly is a Glacier? They are an incredible natural feature that are the result of many years of snow falling and compressing. When enough snow falls, and the environment is cold enough to keep that snow in a single location over time (rather than melting into streams and rivers), it turns into a large mass of ice. They often have water underneath, so they actually flow like a river, but in very slow motion. Glaciers make up about 10 percent of the total land mass of the earth, and are concentrated primarily in the cold regions of Antarctica, Greenland, Canada, and Alaska. However, there are glaciers on every continent, including Africa and South America. (Pybus.com)
It was kind of like the day at sea, accept with amazing views. After the gym and breakfast I spent some time enjoying the sauna in the spa (the sauna and steam room are complimentary) I needed to warm up from the inside out after being outside in the weather so long. For the first time in awhile this Traveling Duo had to take a nap. We are apparently out of "traveling shape". We are not traveling enough!!
After grabbing some lunch I decide to participate in the selfie scavenger hunt. David hit the casino, we'll maybe the casino hit him, at least his pocket anyway. The selfie hunt had us running all over the ship getting selfies. It was a good time. Then it was origami time. We made a bird a bird with Rodrigo. It was a blast.
Dinner in the main dining all week is always a good time. We have made so many friends with the crew. So we end up hanging out a bit. The night was relaxing. We ended up in bed early.

Day 7 of "The 50th State Celebration Vacation"
Day 5, Haines week #1 of 2 week Cruise
We have finally witnessed September Alaska weather. COLD, RAINY, COLD. Wait? Sorry! Did I already say cold? We were the only ship in port today as it can only hold 1 at a time. The other pier is for the ferry. Hains has a population of about 1,700. If you ask our bus driver in the winter the population goes down to about 50. 😅 we took the free shuttle into town, but then discovered that it is a very easy walk. It was a way to keep dry for just a couple of minutes. Here are some fun facts about Haines....They have No traffic lights. Only stop signs.
~They have No fast food. 🤪 there were on 11 graduates in thw class of 2024.
~It cost less for gas at $5.20 per gallon than it does for gallon of milk.
~Their eagle population is almost 4x the people at about 4,000 or more bald Eagles
~They have 5 types of salmon. : Chinook salmon, sockeye salmon, chum salmon, pink salmon, and coho salmon. They get massive in size too!
After walking around this tiny town stopping at the hammer museum, some shops, the grocery store, the libray, and the American Bald Eagle foundation and sloshed our way back to the ship.
We just stopped the Eagle foundation in hopes to check it out, but it was quite pricey at $25 us dollars per person. They only had 6 birds that were being rehabilitated. With a small museum that you could also visit.
We grabbed some lunch, me quicker than David and I set back out for shore so I could catch my excursion. It was pretty fantastic. I hopped into a raft on the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve Float trip. I took a short 20-30 min. Bus trip north to reach the beginning our trip down river. My guide was Kalhiem. A first year raft guide from Oregon with some great stories. Despite not being able to feel my toes and only being able to partially feel my fingers the trip was once in a life time. The rain did stop about 1/2 way down the river. We actually started our rafting trip on the Klaheni eventually joining with the Chilkat river. Thw river nevwr fully freezer over because it is on a fault line making it a hot springs river, even though there is absolutely nothing hot about it. The average water temperature year round is 40°f (4°c) the reason for the low temperature of the river is because the water is coming from Glacier meltwater. Along my amazing journey down the river with some really great people and an awesome guide we saw so many eagles. Some full grown and some still juveniles. Oh yes, and a few nests. 🦅 I have always found the eagle fascinating and really need to share these Fun facts of the American Bald Eagle:🦅
🦅SIZE~ Bald eagles can weigh between 8 and 14 pounds, have a wingspan of 7 to 8 feet, and measure 30 to 40 inches from head to tail. Females are typically larger than males.
🦅NESTS ~Bald eagles build the largest nests of any North American bird, which can reach up to 10 feet wide and weigh over 2,000 pounds. They often return to the same nest year after year, adding to it each time.
🦅HUNTING~ Bald eagles are strong swimmers and can drop down on prey from up to 100 miles per hour. They primarily eat fish, but will also eat ducks, rodents, snakes, and carrion.
🦅EYESIGHT ~Bald eagles have excellent eyesight, allowing them to see fish up to a mile away. They have two centers of focus, which allows them to see forward and to the side at the same time.
🦅COUTSHIP ~Bald eagle males perform dramatic courtship displays to attract females, including high-speed chases and tumbling together.
🦅ENDANGERED STATUS ~Bald eagles were listed as endangered in 1967 due to habitat loss, hunting, and possibly pesticide exposure. They were removed from the endangered species list in 2007.
🦅NATIONAL BIRDS ~Bald eagles are the national bird of the United States and appear on its seal.
Of course I have shared my pictures, but without a proper camera these amazing birds just seem average.
Tonight was 70's night, of course this duo participated! Are you kidding? We wouldn't miss it!!!🤣😂
Our Entertainment tonight was Scott Cavanaugh. We passed as we have seen his juggling act before.
