Sabers United - Recreational Leadership Class
Four years ago, Maui High School joined Special Olympics Unified Sports in track and field. Unified Sports is a program where student's, with and without intellectual disabilities, compete on the same team. After two years of participating in Unified Sports Track and Field, Maui High’s students started asking for more opportunities to play different unified sports. This is when our program became a unique innovative class called Recreational Leadership. The Recreational Leadership class is made up of both students with and without intellectual disabilities. The classes initiative is to create an inclusive school environment where all students feel welcome and have respect for diversity. The class works on achieving its initiative by providing multiple Unified Sports opportunities through Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools, leadership training through group initiatives, problem solving and trust building activities and creating school wide inclusive activities. By participating in the Recreational Leadership class students build new friendships, improve self esteem, gain respect for diversity, promote acceptance and have a high sense of social responsibility.
