Doodle Comfort
Labradoodle self grooming online workshops In the Netherlands I give puppy grooming habituation workshops and 1 day grooming workshops to achieve my goal.
As the daughter of the eldest still working groomer in the Netherlands who is also a breeder of the allergen free coated French and Italian Waterdogs (Obama owns a Portuguese Waterdog) I practically grew up in the grooming salon. I lived with dogs all my life and inherited my mother's grooming talent as well as her unconditional love for curly and fleece coated, big nosed, flappy eared, happy go l
6 GROOMING TECHNIQUES TO KEEP YOUR BLACK CURLY DOODLE TANGLE FREE
Every Doodle coat is different and every coat color and coat structure has its own specific method of maintenance. So having discussed the white curly coat last week, I will talk about the black curly fleece and wool coats in this blog. Because they also have their own grooming manuals and they are also what I call “high maintenance” Doodle coats.
Doodles that are born with a beautiful, shiny, jet black coat usually do not remain jet black. Over time, most black coats become grayish or brownish or wiry white hairs adorn the black surface. This often happens before the coat change or within the first three years and the color development is highly dependent on the genes of the parents and ancestors. The abnormal coat color that can be seen after a few months in the predominantly black coat, is often of a different, softer coat structure and more porous than the smoother, black hair. Also, many black curly fleece and wool coats develop a lighter colored, fluffy, soft undercoat. This underlayer retains a lot of dust and dirt, recognizable by the gray, dull cast over the coat and is therefore very sensitive to tangles. Especially in humid seasons you are more likely to encounter mats.

WHAT'S YOUR AND YOUR DOODLE'S NATURE?
This may be a completely different blog than you are used to from me, but I have something to say and you are the only target group I have and maybe everything will come together (I will come back to this later).
I was recently taking my daily walk: the 6 km walk in the area surrounding my house: a beautiful route across meadows and a stream. And although that normally does me a lot of good, because it not only helps me gain insights, I also feel wonderfully free while walking (something that I am aware is rare in this society), in that moment I only felt sadness. The sun was shining, so I should have felt euphoric, being out in nature. But exactly THAT was what I was missing and I became painfully aware of it.

3 TECHNIQUES TO KEEP YOUR WHITE CURLY DOODLE TANGLE FREE
Each Doodle coat color and coat type has its own specific properties and therefore requires a different form of maintenance.
The white Doodle coats in particular deserve extra attention.
For those who don't know this yet: white Doodle and Water Dog coats are the most maintenance-sensitive coats available! The lighter the coat color is, the more porous the hair and porous hair tangles more quickly and is much more fragile than smooth or coarse hair.

WHY SO MANY GROOMERS STOP GROOMING (LABRA)DOODLES
Recently I saw a newspaper article that immediately caught my attention.
It was from a dog groomer who explained how difficult it is to groom a Labradoodle. Off course this is no secret to me and the newspapers have talked about this before in recent years, but this phenomenon still seems to surprise people. And the many Doodles that were sold during COVID have probably only exacerbated this problem.
When I started DoodleComfort 13 years ago, I did so because many groomers did not yet know how to deal with the tangle sensitive Doodle fur and so when the owners took them to a groomer to be groomed, most of the time they received them back clipped short and unrecognizable. Which wasn't that strange, because groomers were not educated in these kinds of coats and at that time there was no information about Doodle coat care available on the internet yet. The phenomenon was too new and owners generally did not concern themselves with their dog's coat care at all. Before that, they normally went to a grooming salon. But this all changed with the arrival of Doodles and I am proud to say that I saw that trend at the time and that I developed the first specialized grooming workshops for Labradoodle owners.

LOTS OF FLUFFY GROOMED DOODLES
This is what my group workshops 11 years ago looked like. I don't give those anymore, because they are far too exhausting for me (having to repeat myself over and over again and divide my attantion and energy over so many people) and far too over stimulating for the Doodles (getting distracted by so many other Doodles and people in the same room) BUT it's a good way to see how to trim Doodles with different coat structures. Enjoy! :-) # # #

HOW DO YOU KEEP YOUR WHITE DOODLE TANGLE FREE?
This week I have been sharing about why white coloured Doodles are prone to tangling even more than Doodles with a darker coloured coat are. I am curious: is this known to you? And how do you keep your white Doodle tangle free? Please share your experience as an inspiration to your fellow DIY Doodle groomers :-) # # #
WHAT WHITE DOODLE HAIR LOOKS LIKE
Yesterday I shared that white and light coloured Doodle hair is more tangle prone than Doodle hair with a darker colour. This is what that looks like.
WHY WHITE DOODLE COATS ARE THE MOST DIFFICULT ONES
Did you know that white coloured and light coloured Doodle coats are the hardest to maintain? This is because white hair is much more porous than black or brown hair. This is something I talk about in my book "From Scruffy to Lovely" that's on Amazon and my website.
If you were to put a hair under a microscope, you would see that it consists of all these parts stacked on top of each other. With white hair these parts are not aligned well but kind of sticking out, forming little hooks at the ends. When the hairs are in motion or stick together those hooks grab each other, forming tangles. There's no need to shave your Doodle when he's white, but it IS more practical to trim the coat a bit shorter AND thin the coat in the right way, with the right tools regularly. I will share more about this later on, but you can read about this in my free book preview: https://doodlecomfort.com/product/labradoodle-diy-grooming-manual-from-scruffy-to-lovely-print-or-digital/

THE BEST REASON TO (LEARN TO) DIY YOUR DOODLE
Last Monday I posted a blog on all the benefits of DIY grooming and trimming your Doodle, see https://tinyurl.com/2tjk5pcd
During the 15 years that I have been working with Doodles and their owners (first grooming them myself as well, later only giving DIY workshops to owners) I have experienced how sensitive they really are. They just all show it in a different way (as I feel people do). Most Doodles are insecure and easily over stimulated though, so they can't handle busy environments like mass grooming salons. When you groom your Doodle in your own home, you get to choose how you groom him, how long you groom him and when to take breaks and even choose to groom him in stages: dividing the whole process into 3 parts, over 3 days, so your Doodle doesn't need to stand still on the grooming table for hours on end. This is something my customers are embracing the minute they think of it. Maybe something to consider? ;-) # # #

This is how my online instruction video's teach you to groom and trim your Doodle with my special DoodleComfort DIY shaping method. Because I feel that every Doodle should look it's best Self after every grooming session, meaning healthier, more muscular, younger, more adorable and playfull and slender: like a puppy again! 30 REASONS TO START DIY GROOMING YOUR DOODLE
Do you own a Labradoodle (Australian Doodle, GoldenDoodle, Doubledoodle, Multigen Doodle, Cobberdog) , an Oodle (Poodle mix breed) or a Water Dog (Spanish Water Dog, Barbet (French Water Dog), Portuguese Water Dog or (Lagotto) Italian Water Dog? Then you know how much is involved in keeping all that hair under control and tangle-free. Doodles and Water Dogs are the most maintenance-intensive dogs in the world. Try thinking of a breed with a similarly thick coat. There isn't one. Such thick coats were naturally bred for the function the dog had to perform.
