Another benign week in the market, that’s polite speak for crabbing sideways. Because of holidays in the US there hasn’t been a lot of market changing news.

TLDR: OpenSea got a Wells notice from the SEC, AI is gobbling up miners energy assets, Cardano Chang hardfork went live and scammers are pivoting.

To the details 🏃‍♂️

🔘 MilkRoad put out a post on different crypto investment strategies. Benchmarking them against the S&P 500 (SPY) was a nice touch.

🔘 Bitcoin fluctuated around $58k at the start of September. Historically, September is a tough month for Bitcoin, but traders are hopeful that a Fed rate cut could turn things around. The thinking is that rate cuts usually pump more US dollars into the economy, which could strengthen Bitcoin's role as a store of value.

🔘 Telegram’s CEO Pavel Durov’s arrest and investigation is being labelled absurd. It looks like the gloves are coming off for Tech titans, content on platforms, free speech (and crime, let's be real) as well as Governments.

🔘 AI and datacentre companies are buying the energy assets off Bitcoin Miners in the US as they scramble to get enough electricity to power their infrastructure. I don’t hear anyone bleating about how much electricity AI uses though.🤔

🔘 NFT marketplace OpenSea has received a Wells notice from the SEC which claims NFTs are securities. It’s getting quite a lot of attention, none of it good.

🔘 US crypto companies are throwing a fundraiser for VP Harris.

🔘 Robinhood has added Solana to its coin support.

🔘 Cardano’s Chang hardfork has been delayed to September 1st. The main feature introduced will be on-chain Governance.

🔘 Crypto.com is tapping into Standard & Chartered banking network to expand into the UAE.

🔘 The scammers are pivoting with attacks becoming more targeted on people. Please be safe out there.

🔘 And finally....the SEC has warned the FTX estate against paying out in crypto and stablecoins because they might be securities.

Bitcoin, along with equities, had a strong week off the back of the news from the Chair of the Fed saying they would begin cutting rates. While largely expected, the confirmation was enough to get those not buying the news into…buying the news I guess 🤷‍♂️

Aside from that, there has been plenty happening in the crypto space.

🔘 The F13 filings on the BTC ETFs have been analysed. It looks like a quarter in volume, with the majority of holders being non-institutional.

🔘 A blockchain startup, Story, that is using blockchains to stop IP theft by AI’s has been valued at $2bn.

🔘 Traders have locked in over $350m in options that will mature just after the US election, effectively betting that the election will change prices with ⅔ riding the upwards bet. Watch out for volatility folks.

🔘 The Solana ETF was apparently blocked by the SEC because they are still pushing the ‘SOL is a security’ agenda.

🔘 The stablecoin total market cap has hit an all time high. The going narrative is that this means the market has plenty of dry powder for near real time spending on volatile assets.

🔘 Telegram’s CEO, Pavel Duruv was arrested in France as the platform was accused of not moderating illegal content. There are a lot of rumours swirling around focused on the motives. One thing is sure, Telegram’s native token, TON, took a beating.

🔘 Democratic presidential candidate Harris will apparently support measures to grow crypto. A potential 25% tax on unrealised gains, yeah not so good.

🔘 Binance is beefing up its compliance team and has no plans to IPO itself, instead planning for a 100 year business.

🔘 The next Ethereum upgrade is scheduled for Q1 next year, called Pectra.

🔘 Greyscale unveiled an AVAX investment trust.

🔘 Staying with Avalanche, Franklin Templeton announced it is expanding its tokenised Money Market Fund to that chain.

🔘 Sony launched its own layer two network called Soneium to bridge “Web 2 and Web 3” . It is apparently based on the OP stack.

🔘 A Californian Judge has ruled that the coins offered on Kraken aren’t securities, this means the SEC has to prove they are, in court, using the Howey Test.

🔘 Staying in the US, the State of Wyoming is creating its own stablecoin.

🔘 And finally, riffing on stablecoins a little more, MakerDAO is rebranding to “Sky” and DAI is being renamed USDS. Justin Sun’s USDD stablecoin has lost its Bitcoin backing, and is only collateralized with TRX now. NFA advice, but run away, fast.

Weekly Market Recap Time 🧘‍♂️

After a few weeks of chop, this week has felt relatively calm, chill even. It’s summer holiday season in the north, which generally means markets take something of a breather. Because of that, and the fact we are between big Fed announcements, it’s been a relatively quiet week newswise. The biggest event seems to be a kerfuffle with Bitgo, the wrapped Bitcoin (wBTC) custodian. Whatever they proposed, markets didn’t like it and a bunch of competitors came out of the woodwork.

In other news, 94% of all BTC has been mined, Metamask is launching a credit card, Apple is opening up its NFC chip to other payment providers and Aribtrium has voted to allow staking. Also watch out for misinformation, we are in an election year!

🔘 Its S13 filing season and guess what, Goldman Sachs has bought over $400m in BTC ETF stock.

🔘 Coinbase called on the SEC to rethink its DeFi regulation plans, calling it irrational.

🔘 Something is going on with wrapped BTC (wBTC), it looks like the custodian is relocating and that is causing something of a ruckus. wBTC has $9bn in BTC assets FYI. In response Coinbase has launched its own wrapped Bitcoin - cbBTC. (wrapped BTC is a way of getting BTC exposure on the Ethereum network- you deposit BTC into a custodian and they issue you an ERC token - kind of like how stablecoins work)

🔘 Metamask has launched a card which allows you to spend directly from your wallet. Only available to a select group of EU/UK users at the moment.

🔘 Staying with Wallets, Coinbase is giving out grants to those who want to integrate AI (large language modules or LLM) into wallets.

🔘 Apple is (finally) opening up the NFC function on its mobiles, this will theoretically enable web 3 wallets to enable transactions. Some people are pointing out some obvious drawbacks, essentially that we aren’t quite ready.

🔘 Arbitrium DAO has voted to allow the staking of ARB, gaining 91% approval.

🔘 Ethereum and Solana DEX volume is neck and neck.

🔘 USDe issuer Ethena looks like one of the big losers from the market correction.

🔘 Stablecoin liquidity is at its highest level since 2022. This is seen as a proxy for markets gearing up for another leg up. Liquidity drives liquidity is the common refrain.

🔘 There is a bunch of mis-information flying around about potential appointees if the Democrats win with a hint of anti crypto. Just remember, check your sources and we are in an election year.
