What is the p53 Gene?
The p53 gene is a tumor suppressor gene that encodes a protein capable of detecting and responding to DNA damage. When DNA in a cell is damaged, the p53 protein activates repair mechanisms, temporarily halts the cell cycle to allow for repair, or initiates apoptosis (programmed cell death) if the damage is irreparable, eliminating potential cancer cells.

Functions of the p53 Gene
