Do ESG progress disclosures influence investment decisions? - International Journal of Disclosure and Governance 10/10/2023

Exciting news! O'Malley School of Business professors worked together with an undergraduate student on a corporate social responsibility research study that was just published in the International Journal of Disclosure and Governance. Dr. Amanda Sanseverino (Accounting, Business Analytics, CIS & Law Department) and Dr. Jimena González Ramírez (Economics and Finance Department) collaborated with Kelly Cwik ('23, Economics) to examine how the information companies provide about their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) activities affect investment decisions.

Specifically, the team examined whether the inclusion of progress metrics in a company's ESG disclosures, as opposed to targets alone, affects the proportion of capital allocated by investors. They investigated this question by running a randomized survey experiment using disclosures focused on child labor and responsible sourcing issues in chocolate production. As they did not find conclusive evidence of a significant incremental effect from progress reporting, despite such metrics enhancing the relevance and accuracy of ESG disclosures, their study highlights challenges in how nonprofessional investors utilize ESG disclosures when making capital allocation decisions.

We take pride in this work between faculty and students, where Kelly's contributions spanned the entire research journey—including shaping the objective and hypothesis, delving into relevant academic literature, designing and executing the experiment, conducting data analyses, drafting results, and undergoing the peer review process. It was rewarding for Dr. Sanseverino and Dr. González Ramírez to work alongside such a bright and motivated student like Kelly. We are grateful to the Thieke Fellowship for its generous support, which has enabled invaluable collaboration and research endeavors between our faculty and students at the O'Malley School of Business. This partnership enriches our academic community and highlights the remarkable research opportunities available to our business students at Manhattan College.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Jimena Gonzalez, Associate Professor of Economics in the O’Malley School of Business, for being awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation’s Improving Undergraduate STEM Education (IUSE) program.

This two-year grant, which begins in January, 2024, provides $39,939 to support her research project entitled, “Diversifying Economics Education through Plug and Play Video Modules with Diverse Role Models, Relevant Research, and Active Learning”. Below is a summary of Dr. Gonzalez’s project.

Introductory economics is a key general education course taken by almost half of the undergraduate students in the U.S; however, because of outdated teaching methods and un-inclusive practices, the field falls short of its promise in the classroom. This project aims to improve economics education by developing and evaluating a classroom intervention for undergraduate principles of economics courses, using evidence-based methods from STEM education literature. The proposed intervention is a series of “plug and play” easy-to-implement modules consisting of professionally produced videos featuring diverse economists discussing their timely and policy-relevant research, accompanied by curricular materials designed around evidence-based active learning principles to deepen learning and engagement. We theorize that by exposing students to diverse role models and providing instructors with tools to implement active learning, our intervention will influence perceptions about economics; build students’ sense of belonging, economic identity, and self-efficacy; and improve learning, persistence, and retention in economics, especially for diverse students. We use a mixed methods approach to develop and assess the efficacy of our intervention, using focus groups to co-develop our modules with instructors and students and quantitative and qualitative methods to evaluate impact. We will test the impact of our modules with data from pre- and post- student surveys, distributed to both control and treatment sections, that include constructs from validated surveys to measure STEM identity, self-efficacy, connectedness and belonging, and perceptions that are combined with questions that are formulated from our focus groups to measure persistence in economics. We will combine these data with institutional data and estimate a difference-in-differences regression specification.

Dr. Gonzalez will be collaborating on this project with researchers from Salisbury University, Valdosta State University, Williams College, the University of West Georgia and the University of Louisville.

An article by Dr. Amanda Sanseverino, an OMSB faculty member in the Accounting, Business Analytics, CIS & Law Department, is now published in the Review of Accounting Studies. The study, which researches the impact of foreign anti-corruption laws on U.S. firms, can be accessed here. The importance of anti-corruption laws is recognized in United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 16 (peace, justice, and strong institutions), with target 16.5 aiming to substantially reduce corruption in all forms. Her research offers evidence that extraterritorial laws can enhance the effectiveness of anti-corruption regulation in the global economy. Congratulations!

Big News--We're thrilled to announce that Kelly Student Commons has earned enough LEED points to apply for LEED Gold O+M certification with the US Green Building Council. Students in the O'Malley School of Business Real Estate Capstone class, taught by real estate instructor Richard Ross, have been working on this Operations and Maintenance application as a class project.

This prestigious certification recognizes our commitment to sustainability and our efforts to create a healthier, more efficient space for our students, faculty, employees and visitors. With impressive features such as the building management system, energy-efficient equipment, green roof, and proximity to transportation, Kelly Commons has reduced our environmental impact and substantially saved on operating costs.

Huge thanks to the LEED Lab Student Capstone Team, Craig Collins and the Manhattan College Facilities Department, and the O'Malley School of Business for making this achievement possible!
