Did you know that children's dental services are covered by Medicaid?

Children under 21 years of age enrolled in Medicaid receive a comprehensive set of benefits known as the Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnostic and Treatment (EPSDT) benefit. This was introduced in 1967 to give the “right care to the right child at the right time in the right setting.” At minimum, children must receive dental services that:

- Maintain dental health
- Restore teeth
- Relieve pain and infections

In addition, if a dental condition is uncovered through a regular dental examination and it requires treatment, the state must also provide the necessary treatment even if it isn’t normally part of what that state covers.

Here are examples of common dental services that might be provided include:

- Regular dental cleanings and exams
- Fluoride treatments
- Dental sealants
- Fillings
- Crowns
- Extractions
- Other dental services that are medically necessary (this includes emergency treatment as well)

If your child is covered by Medicaid, you will not need to pay co-payments or premiums for your child’s dental care.

Braces for kids can be handled in 1 or 2 phases depending on the developmental stage of the child’s teeth. 2 phases of treatment are recommended in cases where the primary teeth are likely to negatively impact the arrival of permanent teeth. In these cases, we recommend a first round of braces sometime between ages 7 and 10 when the jaw bones and palette are more pliable and space can be preserved for permanent teeth. The second stage, after about age 12, is the traditional braces phase. Adolescent braces at this stage straighten the permanent teeth to their optimal alignment and help craft the perfect smile. Both Phases of Treatment can range from 9 months to 30 months or longer, depending on severity of each diagnosis. Regardless, braces will create the conditions for well-aligned teeth, which will lead to improved oral health, chewing and speech, as well as a beautiful face.
