Dollar Bin on KFAI
Cheap music for thrifty listeners! New episodes Tuesday at noon (CDT) on FA2 (KFAI 90.3-HD2)! Now with an encore Fridays at 6PM on FA2!
I know it seems like I talk about KFAI all the time - and I DO try to post a link to my Saturday show every Monday just to remind you it's going on (although I suspect Zuck hardly ever shows THOSE to you) - but it's really only two or three times a year that I throw you the hard sell and ask if you can check your sofa cushions for some spare change to throw in our tip jar to help keep everything running and paid for over at the station.
I've been an active volunteer for Fresh Air Radio since 2016, a certified engineer and on-call substitute host since 2018, Dollar Bin has been online since 2019, broadcasting on Saturdays since 2020 and a member of the Board of Directors since 2021, ALL of it an enormous privilege and pleasure to represent the best radio station in Minneapolis/St Paul and probably the entire universe.
Way more important than listening to me spin vinyl for an hour every Tuesday or subject you to new music for a couple hours every Saturday (but only when I don't get enough requests!) is the broad spectrum and variety of programming available from Fresh Air - since 1978, we've tried to share our platform with the unheard and the underserved, folks you often wouldn't otherwise hear from in our "mass" media, with the most diverse collection of cultures and languages represented by hundreds of volunteers and hundreds of hours of programming on Fresh Air Community Radio, our second stream and HD2 channel Fresh Air 2, our extensive programming archives on Mixcloud, our network of podcasts available via our website and Soundcloud and probably even more cool stuff I'm forgetting or haven't even learned about yet.
But the reality is all this stuff costs money to keep up - money for the physical location at the corner of Cedar and Riverside, money to keep the transmitter atop the IDS transmitting, money for the servers and clouds hosting our content, making the streams possible and keeping it available on YOUR schedule.
We're doing all right with grants and underwriting (hey, doesn't your business wanna underwrite my show? Let's talk) but the most important part of our support comes from you - in effect, you're giving us the feedback that your vision aligns with ours, you appreciate what we're doing, and you will cheerfully open up your coin purses and speak with your wallets. Or something like that.
As always, I will try to sweeten the deal by adding $5 of my own to every $5 or greater donation that comes in tied to me (mention a show or just CRZ in the text box) and we also have another new crop of lovely shirts and tote bags at hopefully affordable levels (20/30/60/90 or 200 for one of everything). I'll also send a signed photo of me you did not ask for and don't want but tradition is tradition and if you have no children of your own, I'm told they look great on your refrigerator.
Although encouraged to start a Facebook fundraiser, I think it's actually way better to hit up our website and make your donation there - of course, you can call 612.375.9030 if you want to take care of it over the phone. (Who knows, you may end up with yours truly answering that phone!) But if you're comfortable giving your information to Zuck instead, I'm sure not gonna turn away your donation to THIS fundraiser!
Because I'm a day late, a couple of you have already come through - thanks to James and Steve!
This drive's goal is $60,000. As a stretch goal, I'd love to be responsible for $3,000 of that. I think that means I need to talk 100 people into averaging $25 although that puts me on the hook for $500 so maybe I'll rethink my math.
Even if you can't donate financially, consider volunteering your precious time! There are many opportunities to help out - let me know if you're interested and I can tell you what's available and connect you with our coordinators if I haven't scared you off after that. I'm personally around and manning the pledge phone Monday through Friday starting at an unspecified time during the AM Drive (because it's unlikely I'm there right AT 6am) - give me a call or come on by the station! Last day will be Wednesday, 9/25.
Got nine or ten new episodes in the PO Box today! (Well, we'll see...)

Friday and Saturday you can be mystified by me presenting TEN HOURS OF MUSIC on KFAI and its second webstream!
All day Friday on Fresh Air 2 is the 24 hour takeover called DISCO NEVER DIED DAY and my piece of it starts at 2am! It's mostly a rerun of my "Dollar Bin Disco" show I produced for this same day two years ago but with some added bonus material to stretch it out to a massive FOUR HOURS! (In this photo, I am clearly thinking about disco.)
At 10PM, I sit down in Studio 4 for my third time as guest presenter on CRAP FROM THE PAST - there'll probably be a little disco during THESE two hours as well, along with some Giorgio Moroder NON-disco.
It doesn't stop there, though, as immediately following at midnight Saturday I am honoured (with a "u" because it's Bri-ish) to once again present TRUE BRIT! RADIO as Simon is off celebrating a 30th Anniversary or some other nonsense. Expect me to play a lot of the stuff with all the swears that I can play at midnight but not at 5PM! Also, I hear there's a new 32 minute SAULT track - that might be a good way to click off about 26% of them two hours.
And yes, I'm also presenting my *own* show WEEKEND ON DEMAND at 5PM just like I do most Saturdays - have you made YOUR request yet? Somewhere in here I may get some sleep but will also spend several hours at the Mall of America dutifully catching shiny pokémon during Fest weekend. (see also: Sunday)
All this stuff will surely be archived if you can't consume it live, but isn't it more fun to tune in live? 90.3! 90.3/HD2! KFAI•org! CRZ! CRZ! CRZ!
Dollar Bin 272: £3.43
Record stores attract people from all over the world so it was great to have someone who heard about our shop through friends and decided to get involved while here in the UK.
DJ CRZ last night all the way from Minnesota USA for an in-store set 🇺🇸 What's also cool is he's a radio DJ in the city of Minneapolis and host of his "Dollar Bin Radio Show"
All the records in his set last night were picked up over the past week during his trip!
BREAKING NEWS! I am helping Christian Fritz pinch hit next Friday at Dusty's for dj shane kramer's monthly "sinatra to slayer" residency! Yes, it will take TWO of us till try to fill Shane's shoes but you have my word we will BRING IT with magical vinyl music for eating, drinking and quite possibly moving your body around from 10PM until Question Mark. I will spam you with an invite shortly but if you'd like to RSPV **right now** the link will magically appear in the first comment to this status!
Are we back? WE ARE BACK. Here's my two hour set from Twin Cities New Wave Day yesterday. If you like this, there are many more hours available from KFAI's Soundcloud with way even cooler new wave! Thanks to everyone who helped me build this playlist a couple weeks back if you can even remember that far.

March 4th is here again tomorrow and March 4th means Twin Cities New Wave Day!
Seems like of late I've alternated contributions between taped and live DJ'ing (or being suspended) so THIS year it's a two hour set as part of a full 24 hour takeover of Fresh Air 2! You can tune in on your fancy HD radio (KFAI 90.3 FM-HD2) or stream it from KFAI•org and the KFAI Community Radio app, available from the App Store and Google Play. My set airs from 5 to 7PM CST - 5PM is ALSO when the celebration begins at Grumpy's with live DJs complementing the usual Minnesota Monday specials!
If you can't wait and want to listen to some new wave RIGHT NOW, scroll on and I'll dig up my 2021 set and 2023 simulcast live from Falling Knife and link them below.
Once again Zuck is suggesting I might enjoy my own pages. ON IT
A little late night math for .... probably just me and I'm BARELY curious enough but was determined to figure it out:
If you started Dollar Bin 001 RIGHT NOW and managed to get through all 256 episodes in chronological order without stopping, it would take you 1,057,933 seconds to get to the end of Dollar Bin 248 - that's 12 days, five hours, 52 minutes, 13 seconds...during which Dollar Bin 249 would also come out, so tack on another hour plus on the end.
(The "dubplementals" are episodes 92½, 97½, 105½, 113½, 118½, 120½, 139½ and 147½ - that's how we get 256 episodes but are only on 248)
Today's the day! In honour of our SIXTH season premiere, we give you SIX tracks in SEVENTY minutes! Now THAT'S the good stuff! Dollar Bin 248 drops at the top of the hour! (It just MIGHT be on kfai.org even as I type this, shhhhhhhhh)
HAPPY NEW YEAR! Tomorrow we start our (I can't believe it) SIXTH season with Dollar Bin 248 but for today it's a fifth anniversary celebration of Dollar Bin 001!

CRZ pulled a late night shift and shared four hours of funk as part of the FUNKRAISER - a couple of these tracks have even previously appeared on Dollar Bin... but we don't tell you which ones.
