It’s SUNDAY! Join the men and women of the Seek To Do More community by starting your week off with Sunday Carrie’s!

How to do it: Pick up something heavy and carry it for a half-mile total distance.

Could be a loaded trap bar, dumbbells, a boulder, a sandbag, a loaded backpack, or even your big heavy bag of dog food in the pantry.

Whatever you got- just find something heavy, pick it up, and carry it.

0.5 miles.

This will build real-life strength while simultaneously simulating what we must do in our every day life.

Pick up something heavy (aka the weight of our world) and carry it a long way (aka persevere through challenge).

Make it happen! [+]

Let me tell you something I’ve learned after growing up in a mountain town where hiking culture is a way of life:

hiking really sucks... if you’re not in shape to do it.

Most of my life I was the guy who reluctantly agreed to go on a hike only to struggle going up one mountain let alone multiple in a day.

I was the guy who could barely breathe, with legs on fire, always on the verge of quitting (or actually quitting…thanks Big Slide Mountain).

I legitimately used to hate it.

But then something changed. I got stronger and in the proper shape to not just make it to the summit, but I could enjoy the climb itself too.

I quickly realized that getting in shape wasn’t just about looking better or lifting heavier weights—it was about better performance in life.

And being able to perform better in life opened me up to new adventures…adventures in the mountains I stared at my whole life.

When you train your body for the demands of hiking, something incredible happens: the struggle fades, and the adventure becomes so much more than you ever realized it was.

When you’re physically fit, those once-brutal ascents become opportunities to take in the scenery, connect with nature, and actually enjoy the journey.

Every step feels more purposeful and every summit becomes even more rewarding. You’re not just surviving the hike—you’re thriving. What a gamechanger.

Training for the mountains is about preparing for the moments that will “take your breath away” (but in a good way).

It’s about making sure you have the strength, stamina, and mental toughness to go further and see more of what the mountains have to offer.

To learn the lessons they are ready to teach you.

Simply put- getting stronger makes hiking more fun.

So, if you’re ready to make your time in the mountains more enjoyable, it’s time to put in the work. The trail will always be there waiting for you, but how the experience on the trail unfolds? That’s up to you.

Keep pushing, keep climbing. [+]

Guiding people in the woods and up the mountains is a unique experience every time…

Often times people are nervous they’re going to “slow the group down” but instead something magical usually happens…

They don’t slow the group down, instead they usually end up realizing how much stronger, faster, and more capable are to climb. They keep up better than they ever expected.

Why? Because they’re surrounding themselves with people who help them become better.

Sometimes it takes being around others who are perceived as “faster” or more “experienced” to show you what you’re truly made of…and that’s a good thing.

Also, having the reassurance that “it’s ok to go slow” usually ends up helping people ACTUALLY level up to a higher place than they thought they could.

It’s always a beautiful thing to watch happen.

They learn they’re stronger, faster, and more capable than they thought. That realization really is where the beauty lies.

The mountains once again will teach you valuable lessons about life if you’re willing to listen to them.

So, do you surround yourself with people who bring out a “stronger, faster, more capable” version of you, or do you surround yourself with people who don’t?

Choose wisely. [+]

You too?

Mental toughness is a prerequisite for mountain adventure…

Why?

Because the mountains don’t care about you.

It will be hard…muddy…wet…exhausting…physically demanding and mentally taxing…

And no one is making you do it- you’re choosing to be there.

So if you’re not mentally prepared for the trek your adventure is going to likely leave you broken, as opposed to ready for more.

But when you head into the woods mentally tough, physically strong, and ready for the task at hand, you’ll likely leave the woods feeling fulfilled and spiritually rejuvenated…as opposed to feeling like death.

Quick actionable take away to build that mental toughness:

Create a 7-day challenge for yourself where you do the same physically demanding workout 7 days in a row.

That get the fire burning 🔥

If you need help building mental toughness or getting physically stronger for your backcountry pursuits, send me a DM with the goals you have and we can talk.

Here’s the easiest, high bang-for-buck, training exercise that you can do from anywhere and get strong, lean, and fit for both the mountains and every day life…

Weighted carries of any kind.

Pick up something heavy and carry it for a challenging distance.

Yes. That’s it.

Don’t overthink it. Pick up something that challenges you and simply carry it for a distance that challenges you. Drop it as needed to rest. Finishing is all that matters.

No excuses anymore [+]

23/07/2024

Well, well, well…I’m noticing a trend here…

Squats and deadlifts will give you the MOST bang-for-your-buck to strengthen the key muscles you need strong for your backcountry adventures…

They’re also the key muscles you need strong for life too...

Funny how that works out, right?

Today’s Seek To Do More Program women’s group hike (with their coach, ) in the Adirondack Mountains was flawless.⛰

Photos from Seek To Do More's post 01/07/2024

“I originally sought out James as a coach to help me lose weight and get back to the hiking trails that I so dearly love.

I can proudly say I’ve lost my backpack in weight and I’m now back on the trail. The “hiking”and “losing weight” however seem more of a by product compared to the tools for life I gained from the Seek To Do More Program with James.

With the program I found a rhythm for my life, a set of standards that I hold myself accountable to, as well as a mental and spiritual sharpening that I never expected.

The improved hiking is really just a by product of the daily work we’ve done in my life.”

You’re doing an amazing job, Julie, you’ve earned your NAB CARD!

Keep up the good work and enjoy the Appalachian trail! [+]

She developed a set of new STANDARDS for her life that elevated way more than just her physical fitness

Non-negotiables that she fulfilled daily which led her to becoming her strongest self.

Proud of you Julie- now enjoy your adventure! You freaking earned it!

Sunday carry day. Pick up something heavy and carry it for a challenging distance.

Build some grit. Life demands us to be strong- physically and mentally.

“If it was easy everyone would do it”

Cliches are cliches for a reason….because they’re typically true

Do you want to be like “everyone”?

Or do you want to rise above the status quo?

A few months from now you could look back on yourself as you read this very post right now and feel like you’ve become a new person….someone who’s reclaimed their self-belief, confidence, purpose and developed unmatched mental strength to navigate every challenge life dates throw at you…

Oh, and in the best physical shape of your life.

Sound good to you?

First, gotta choose to take the initial step towards that life…

Second, you need to develop a plan of action to take you from where you are to where you want to be…develop a set of standard to live by that will take you there

Third, you need to believe in yourself and put in the effort every damn day. Show up for yourself.

If you need help doing it, we’re happy to help. Just reach out to us.

There’s a giant asleep inside of you ready to be awakened. I guarantee it. [+]

Emotions, they’re like the weather – constantly changing, unpredictable, and, if we’re honest with ourselves- all over the damn place.

But standards? Standards are like the North Star – steady, unwavering, and guiding you towards your true north.

When you operate on emotions, you’re at the mercy of every passing feeling, every fleeting mood swing, every troll on the internet...

But when you operate on standards you set for yourself, you hold yourself to a higher level of accountability.

You commit to something greater than how you feel in the moment – you commit to the life you want to live, the person you want to become, and the results you want to achieve.

Holding yourself to a higher standard isn’t always easy…and it’s not supposed to be

It requires discipline, consistency, and a whole lot of grit. But you know what standards build? Purpose.

Purpose is the fuel that ignites the fire within you, driving you forward even when the going gets tough.

So, ditch the rollercoaster ride of emotions and start operating based on high standards you hold yourself to.

I encourage you to commit to living life to a standard YOU set for yourself that challenges you to uphold every day…

And then hold yourself accountable to those standards that will create the life you’re looking for…

Chase that life of purpose with relentless determination.

Because when you raise the bar, that’s when the magic happens. [+]

It’s Sunday. So we pick up something heavy and carry it.

Build some grit today.

16/05/2024

Becoming skinny-fat is still fat…and being fat is what you’re trying to change, right? So, let’s do what we came to do.

Now that those I’ve offended have continued scrolling, here’s the how to do it...

Our bodies are naturally going to shed muscle before it sheds fat. Why? Because our body wants to survive first and foremost. It wants to survive “the winter” hence keeping body fat and shedding muscle mass first.

But if we tell our body “you need to keep this muscle because it’s being used” your body will then say to itself “oh, these muscles are being traumatized. Crap, I want to survive so I’d better hold onto this muscle…I’ll burn the fat instead”

Ever seen a backpacker finish a long hiking trail, excited they dropped 15lbs, but in reality all they did was drop 15lbs of upper body muscle? They just atrophied.

…their body basically ate itself.

Here’s how to keep that from happening…

1.) Protein
2.) Strength training

Here are the CHEAT CODES and a quick summary of how and why…

1.) Eat all the MEAT.
Roughly your body weight daily in grams of PROTEIN…aka eat all the meat.

Cheat code- Fill half your plate at each meal with meat. It will fill you up, help you build muscle, and in this case, help you maintain muscle while seeking to lose weight.

2.) STRENGTH Training NOT Cardio

Cheat Code- Tell your body it needs to hold onto the muscle by training for strength. Lift weights. Get stronger. Train to strengthen and build muscle. Cardio has its place but it’s not what you think it’s for.

Your heart is a muscle and cardio trains the heart the same way a shoulder press trains the shoulder muscles. Cardio will typically burn more glycogen not fat anyways.

Moral of the story- go lift weights, build strength, and eat more meat. That’s how you’ll get the body you’re actually looking for.

You’ll perform better too.

This is the approach we take in and why our clients only drop bodyfat, not muscle…and all get stronger in the process.

If you want extra help doing the same send me a DM or comment “STRENGTH” below and I’ll help steer you in the right direction.
