The more you know…

Saw this image out in the wilds of the internet and felt it was a good moment for some myth busting. Color this gardener SHOCKED to find out how many people think that seedless watermelons are GMO or created in labs! Because that is absolutely, 100% not true.

Seedless watermelons are just the offspring of two regular watermelons that, when cross pollinated always creates a melon that doesn't develop seeds. Hybridization is not the same thing as GMO/transgenics. Another example of this would be my dog Mia! When you cross a pug with a beagle, in the first generation you are always going to get a small dog with a fawn coat and a medium length black muzzle. (Or a black coat, depending on the Pug you are crossing with.) That's not genetic modification, it's just breeding. It's not unnatural anymore than your own children are unnatural.

Tons of you buy hybrid tomato seeds from store displays every year and eat them happily while turning away from the watermelon on the shelves! Eat the watermelon without fear my friends! Knowing is half the battle!

How is your Spring going so far?

Mine has been super busy with lots of projects happening. I might not be completely happy with where the garden is so far but I am satisfied with the accomplishment of getting so much done and seeing the prospect for a great garden in due time.

How about you?…

Keep an eye out for these ladies!
Also remember they want nothing to do with us an will usually stay well away from us. It’s usually us that disturb them and bring them out. They are great predators of other pests and should just be allowed to get back to their hideout.
Always wear gloves when working around locations that they are likely to hide in and all will be well…

Lampranthus spectabilis, the trailing iceplant. My neighbor added this delight to his portion of the alleyway gardens. It really brings some colorful pop to the nooks and crannies…
