To celebrate World Ocean Day our Lembeh Foundation Warriors have been busy teaching 40 local children and teenagers about the importance of corals and how to plant and care for new corals.

As part of their presentation they helped the participants to plant coral fragments on to 4 metal spider frames which were then positioned on the House Reef at Lembeh Resort. We can’t wait to see how they grow and what marine life they attract!

This is just one of the many projects that our Lembeh Foundation Warriors are involved in and we couldn’t be prouder of them. A big thank you from everyone at Lembeh Foundation to ADTO e.V. for helping to support this initiative!

It’s World Environment Day! In honor of the day, our Lembeh Foundation Warriors organized a beach cleanup at one of our nearby beaches - Pantai Abu.

The Warriors involved 40 children and teenagers from our local villages to help and to see first hand how some of the plastic waste generated on the island ends up on our beaches.

Staff from Lembeh Resort and the Dive Center also joined the cleanup to show their support too - thank you!

This is another of our Lembeh Foundation Warrior’s projects that are supported by ADTO e.V. - thank you for helping to make our Warrior initiatives possible!

We have been busy recently undertaking our annual shopping for school backpacks and school uniforms. In keeping with our founders commitment to education for all, each year we purchase backpacks, school supplies, and school uniforms for kids whose families need a helping hand.

This week we have the pleasure of distributing the bags to kids at schools in our local villages of Pintu Kota Kecil, Pintu Kota Besar, and Batu Riri.

In preparation for International Biodiversity Day, and to raise awareness of Lembeh’s incredible marine life and critters, we organized some extra special educational projects for the children from our local villages.

To make learning about biodiversity fun, the children learned that biodiversity can be seen everywhere - even in their schoolyard! The children also made a herbarium before learning about biodiversity underwater.

Each student drew their own picture of marine life to collectively show the biodiversity of fish and critters found in the Lembeh Strait - we definitely have some great artists in our classes!

This is just one of our recent projects and we have more to come throughout the year. A big thank you to ADTO e.V. who have provided funding for our 2024 projects - we couldn’t be more grateful!

We have been busy this month at the Lembeh Foundation Green Library and Learning Center in our local village of Pintu Kota Kecil.

It’s important that the children who use the facility feel at home in the center and to make it an even more personal space for them we undertook a community door decorating project.

The kids unleashed their creative talents and decided to use their own painted hand prints to personalize the door - we think it looks fantastic and the children had a lot of fun in the process!

We have more environmental and sustainability projects planned for this month with our ADTO e.V. supported Lembeh Foundation Warriors - stay tuned!!

Each year the Lembeh Foundation honors the commitment made over two decades ago by Lembeh Resort to support education for all children in our local villages of Pintu Kota Kecil, Pintu Kota Besar and Batu Riri.

Every year we use donations to purchase school backpacks for children from families in need of financial support.

The backpacks contain much needed stationary items including pencils, pens, rulers, coloring kits and other essentials.

All children attending school in Indonesia are required to wear a school uniform so we also provide full school uniforms, including shoes, so that the children are able to attend classes everyday.

A big thank you to everyone who has donated and made this possible once again!

We are seeing our hard work pay off!

We have been working together in collaboration with Seasoldier Sulut to plant new mangrove forests in our local village of Pintu Kota Kecil.

Our new award winning Lembeh Foundation Eco Warriors joined the project as part of our funding from ADTO e.V. along with school children from the village - hopefully our next generation of warriors!

Seasoldier are a community that aims to spread what they call “Eco friendly Virus” and we couldn’t be happier than to support them on their mission!

Thank you everyone for joining us and for making this such a successful day of coral reef preservation!

This week we have planted new corals and educated our team on coral reef conservation.

Following a presentation by Vincent Chalias from Ocean Gardener about the importance of corals, we took 16 teenagers - including our 5 new Lembeh Foundation Warriors to implement their new skills and knowledge underwater.

Alongside Lembeh Resort’s inhouse biologist, Jefry, plus our team of Lexy Charlton, Friska and Helen, the participants attached coral fragments on 5 coral spiders on land and submerged them on the Lembeh Resort House Reef. The spiders will provide the coral fragments with a solid base on which to grow and flourish!

It was a fun day, and we can’t wait to watch the corals grow. 🪸🪸🪸

A big thank you to the Lembeh Resort dive team for helping us with positioning the spiders underwater.

As always, it was great to see kids jumping into the water, snorkeling, and enjoying their local underwater environment - we are so happy to be able to encourage local children to engage with their marine surroundings!!

Thank you so much to ADTO e.V. who provided us with the funding to make these initiatives possible!

Our Green Guru Helen and our new Lembeh Foundation Eco Warriors have been busy!

These are pictures from our latest activity in our local villages of Mawali and Kelapa Dua. As part of our latest campaign, Helen provided the children with an educational session about plastic pollution along with a fun quiz and prizes! Our new Eco Warriors also taught kids how to upcycle old plastic bottle caps into decorations.

Great job everyone - and a big thank you to ADTO e.V. who granted us funding to make our latest initiatives possible!

Late post from our busy last week, we hosted a workshop in collaboration with the Dinas Pariwisata Kota Bitung (Bitung Government Tourism Office) for staff from the Bitung tourism office.

The workshop was aimed at raising awareness about plastic waste and how to develop financially fruitful processes that can economically benefit local communities.

Participants learned how waste plastics can be upcycled to make souvenir items to sell to international guests visiting our region – therefore turning trash into cash, while protecting and preserving our terrestrial and underwater environments at the same time – win, win!

Our Lembeh Foundation Green Guru, Mrs. Helen, headed up the presentation which covered the process from start to finish – from collecting waste materials to manufacturing and through to marketing and sales.

Thank you to everyone from the tourism department for organizing the workshop and to all those who participated. We are looking forward to even more sustainable tourism on Lembeh Island!

What an achievement! During the past months of south wind notable amounts of trash were washed up on this uninhabited south facing beach. We decided to organize a big cleanup there – 35 people consisting of energetic kids from Pintu Kota village, Lembeh Foundation members and Warriors, as well as Lembeh Resort guests and staff. In total the beach was freed from 71 sacks of waste, a total of 890,30kg – of which 505,40kg were water bottles alone! Thank you everybody who participated, supports us and is conscious about their use of single use plastic 🙏

Meet the new generation of change makers, our Lembeh Foundation Warriors! Thanks to the support from ADTO e.V. , we have started our new project this month, selecting six teenagers from our local community, who will join our Lembeh Foundation activities, gain a vast knowledge about sustainability issues and solutions, and tools to move their community forward. The aim is to give them a wide range of education to become the new leaders.

Please meet Fani, Ferin, Jeli, Jeven, Deva and Samuel from Pintu Kota Kecil. They are between 15-21 years old and have been joining the Lembeh Foundation on past activities. They are super excited to be given the chance to learn so much more now, be an even more active part and make an even bigger impact in the future. Thank you for welcoming the Lembeh Foundation Warriors with a thumbs up or even a small message!

Christmas time is coming! That’s a wonderful opportunity for us to give collected plastic a second life and create wonderful Christmas ornaments, like the Christmas tree, snowflake and even snowman shown in the photos. Also Bintang bottle caps and Nespresso capsules were turned into beautiful ornaments. Upcycling is fun! So in another workshop the teenagers in our neighboring village of Pintu Kota Kecil learned how to iron plastic and use a sewing machine to turn discarded plastic packaging into beautiful and unique shopping bags.

Lembeh Resort buys these ornaments and bags from the community and sells them in the resort giftshop, with the proceedings going to the Lembeh Foundation making other projects possible again.

A special thank you to ADTO e.V. Stay tuned for our next post to learn more about these wonderful active teenagers you see here.

Thank you so much! One of our amazing repeater guests recently donated to take the children from our local village to the Tangkoko Nature Reserve and Tasik Oki Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre.

The children had the chance to see the animals up close and learn about the importance of protecting them. They also learned about the issues of wildlife trafficking and how Tasik Oki is working to minimize factors that are affecting their habitats.

It was a truly memorable experience for our guest and the children who got to see tarsiers, black macaques, sun bears, and so many tropical birds. There was curiosity, joy and even some singing along the way!!

What an amazing effort by our Lembeh Foundation Team who have been super busy this week with a much-needed beach clean up on Pantai Sarena! The team collected 5 large sacks - each of which was around 5kg - so a total of 25kg of waste plastic!

From the plastic that was collected, it was estimated that it was made up of 60% plastic bottles, 30% small water cups, and 10% other plastics. All plastics will now be taken to the Lembeh Foundation Trash Bank to be disposed of and recycled responsibly.

Well done to everyone involved!

We are getting busy again! This week, Lembeh Resort staff and Dive Guides joined Lembeh Foundation alongside Ocean Gardener's Vincent Chalias and Nicole Helgason in planting new corals!

Coral Fragments were carefully attached to these frames which were then placed on the Lembeh Resort house reef where they have ideal growing conditions. As the corals grow they will provide habitat for fish and critters and can also be transplanted into areas of reef that have suffered from storm damage to encourage regeneration.
