Expanded pop music.
Three facts about the city I'm going to visit tomorrow: it has an important place in my personal biography, it is the birthplace of the best pop lyricist in the UK and it is the current home of the best prog metal band in the UK.
Messing around trying to cover a song by Everything Everything before it's been released, based purely on what I think it will sound like.

I hope when I say the mix needs "some TLC", that's taken to mean "attention to detail" rather than "make this sound like No Scrubs".
My album of the year is "Celebrants" by Nickel Creek. I have nothing intelligent to say about it, but it's a beautifully moving and profound body of work, that did everything I wanted music to do in 2023 - highly recommend!
I got a ukulele for Christmas this year. As a guitar player, it's been very fun getting to grips with the unfamiliar chord shapes, and I've managed to learn one song so far - here's my cover of Mariuk's beautiful song "The Frog".
Quick plug for my friends Martha and Olivia Agostini, and their immersive album/graphic novel/video game project Roxy Doom. They're crowdfunding for their latest release, which you can read more about here:

All music I write from now on to be influenced by Nickel Creek, with immediate effect.
In one of my sillier moments (I do have them occasionally), I decided to try and write a song parody of my favourite living band. I came across the lyrics again today - see if you can guess the band......
Ah, the aesthetic inflexibility of youth - I remember when I wrote this song I had an existential crisis about whether I'd compromised my art by including a 17 second passage with a strong "vibe" but no discernible melody. Nice to find all these years later that it did, in fact, have a melody after all:

Is it a cover song if nobody in the audience knows the song you're covering?

Thanks to everyone who came to Render Ghosts' gig at the Shacklewell Arms this week, we had so much fun!
Tonight! Render Ghosts take the stage at The Shacklewell Arms alongside Ben Lamb and Family Stereo. Here's a little reminder of what we sound like live! Free tickets available here: https://link.dice.fm/Z5f8fb90fd39
Recurring dream where I travel to Sheffield to see Pulp play a gig. I've had this dream something like 5 or 6 times. Over to you.
Great session recording piano with Steve Troughton last night, ably assisted by the engineering wizardry of Callum Haynes (ZigZag Studios, Woolwich). We were blessed with a perfect sunset out on the terrace upon arrival, and then got down to work!
My friends Northwest are booking a European tour and are looking for a few extra dates. Do get in touch if you think you can help, they're an amazing live act and lovely people, so a Northwest gig in your town is good news!
Saw this band live the other night, and now I'm kind of obsessed with their music, they feel like the closest thing we have to Safetyword right now:

Delighted to announce the next Render Ghosts show on 12th June with Ben Lamb and Friends Serene. I was lucky enough to catch Ben's last London show in November, and absolutely loved it, so I'm especially excited for this gig. Tickets available here: https://link.dice.fm/Z5f8fb90fd39
Can it be a chorus if it only happens once?
Behind the scenes footage from that long lost album I made back in the 70s.
Three cheers for the new album by Wilder Maker (well, it was released in November, but it's new to me). Pretty much the only artist I like whose lyrics are as accomplished and original as the music (and vice versa), what a great band.
