Grade 11 Humanistas Attend Cha-Cha Symposium
April 28, 2024 | Kiara De La Cruz

The Grade 11 Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) students were present at a symposium, entitled “ONE MORE CHA-CHA(NCE): A Lecture on the Economic Amendments of the Philippine Constitution,” facilitated by the UP Association of Political Science Majors (UP APSM) in Palma Hall at the University of the Philippines-Diliman (UPD) last April 27, 2024. The students were guided by the HUMSS strand coordinator, Mr. Roel R. Villamor.

The symposium started with the Opening Remarks of Ms. Gwen Moreen M. Marasigan, the UP APSM Vice President for Recruitment. Then, they immediately proceeded to the introduction of speakers.

The first speaker was the Assistant Professor at the UP School of Economics, Mr. Jan Carlo B. Punongbayan, PhD. By giving the economic perspective of Charter Change (Cha-Cha), Mr. Punongbayan focused on the implications it had on the industries of Education, Advertising, and Public Services, together with the existing laws that the state already has to open itself to foreign direct investments.

The following and last speaker was Mr. Dennis V. Blanco, DPA, also the Associate Professor at UPD’s Department of Political Science, who gave the political perspective of Cha-Cha. Mr. Blanco shed light on the basic information of Cha-Cha, including why it is done, its advantages and disadvantages, and the different means of it. He also discussed the former Philippine administrations’ amendments and revisions, their main objective, methods used, and its outcome.

An awarding of certificates for the speakers was held after their lectures, respectively. After this, Mr. Joaquin Labio, the Deputy Education and Research Officer of the Kabataan Partylist, gave his message and insights on the discourse earlier. He touched on the importance of educating the youth on Cha-Cha and even mentioned the current headlines today which is the full foreign ownership of schools in the Philippines.

To conclude, the UP APSM President and Vice President for Academics, Ms. Maria Diana Belza, delivered the Closing Remarks of the event.

The masters of ceremonies, Ms. Janica Kye E. Dollero and Ms. Daria Loraine D. Miranda, headed all the parts of the event and were members of the UP APSM themselves as well.

SHS Holds 2nd Departmental Assembly, Clash of Houses Awarding
Apr 13, 2023 | Haniel Espinosa

The Senior High School (SHS) department held their Second Departmental Assembly on the 12th of April, 2024 at the newly refurbished College Auditorium.

One of the purposes of the assembly was to give the SHS students a re-orientation on the selection and criteria for the awardees of Final Honors and Eagle Certificates at the end of the Academic Year 2023-2024. This matter was presented by the department’s Academic Coordinator, Mrs. Maria Fe R. Chua in its entirety. She also discussed the respective criteria for the eventual Academic, Non-Academic, and Co-Curricular Awardees, as well as the different activities for the remaining months of April and May.

After the presentation, the awarding for the winners of the Clash of Houses in the culmination of a fierce competition between the Red and Gold Houses was headed by emcees Cyril E. Lim and Ace Joshua F. Borbe. They announced the respective winners for the different Minor and Major Sports, as well as Project Monumento, a mascot design contest, wherein Imperio del Rojo secured the victory.

Imperio’s outstanding list of wins throughout the clash gave them their fifth consecutive Clash of Houses victory. Red House leader Thea Jessica P. Redulla expressed her utmost gratitude to the talent, determination, and hard work of all the members of the house in a stirring speech.

When asked how it feels to have the collective efforts from the Red House translate to their exceptional triumphs, Redulla explained, “Of course, it feels great to be able to see, yet again, the shine of victory on behalf of Imperio Del Rojo. The wins we've accumulated are fuel to the burning passion that never left Imperio, and are evidence that hard work and foundational team work were established and were necessary in the process. It's a shared victory between me and my house members that I won't shy away from giving them the light that they deserve to shine on. I'm proud that Imperio has received the fruits of their labor greatly, and I am unconditionally grateful for them.”

HUMSS Strand Partakes in Project Veritas
March 9, 2024 | Kiara De La Cruz

Grade 11 and 12 Humanities and Social Sciences Strand students participated in the annual Project Veritas, entitled “HumaLinis ‘24,” on the 9th of March 2024. This is a community engagement activity organized by the said strand’s coordinator, Mr. Roel R. Villamor.

In addition, Mr. Albert G. Banaag, a barangay councilor, as well as other barangay officials, and Department of Environment and Natural Resources Estero Rangers joined and supported the project, further nourishing the community involvement.

A week prior to the activity, students were reminded to bring essentials, namely: extra clothes, rubber boots and gloves, and an extra broom, for the students were tasked to clean a part of the river in Barangay Bayanan, Muntinlupa City this year.

The students were split into groups of four who were guided by local workers onto where they would be stationed to clean. Tongs and empty sacks were provided for trash to be picked up and put in the right place.

Mr. Villamor stated that this activity was meant “for us to engage in various community development projects to have a good realization on what is happening in our environment and society.”

Altogether, awareness and a better outlook on the current situations surrounding the less-privileged were gained. Other than this, the Humanistas were able to utilize the Augustinian value of Care for the Common Good to achieve the agenda—to help the local community through the means of doing something deemed as small but ultimately impactful.
