Back as an undergrad, my school had a strong collegiate ACDA chapter in which I was very involved. I knew it was a great organization to be in as a college student but admittedly, lost touch with it when I first started teaching. What brought me back years later was seeing how many of my talented, smart, and passionate choral director friends were in CT-ACDA!
I remember thinking ‘I know how busy these people are, but they are making time for this organization. Maybe I should do the same.’ I’m SO GLAD I did. I hadn’t realized how helpful the National ACDA resources are until I rejoined! I didn’t know how inspiring and beneficial the CT-ACDA Conferences were until I started attending them. I didn’t understand how much my teaching would grow just by surrounding myself with this network of wonderful people….until I did and it did! Do yourself a favor: take the time to join. (Or, if you are like me, rejoin).
Your students will benefit, your teaching will benefit, and YOU will benefit.

During my undergraduate, I was lucky enough to participate in a collegiate student chapter of A.C.D.A. We attended conferences, assisted with running festivals, and grew together as classmates through this shared experience. At the time, I would have never expected the immense impact A.C.D.A. has had on me as a conductor, educator, and scholar.
The many professional development experiences challenged me to be better at what I do on the podium and in the classroom. None of these experiences would have been
possible without the fantastic members of A.C.D.A.
I am proud to be associated with these people and an organization that collectively work for the betterment of our profession.

Selena Quintanilla-Pérez (Selena) was a Mexican-American singer born on April 16th, 1971. She began performing as the lead singer in her family band (called "Selena y los Dinos") and launched a solo career in the 1980s. Her music incorporated a cross-cultural blend of Tejano and American elements that made her music unique and exciting. As audiences in Mexico and the US alike listened to songs like "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom" and "No Me Queda Mas", citizens of both countries were able to embrace multiculturalism as themes of love, loss, and ambition brought them together amidst growing political tension in the early 1990s. In 1995, her life was taken by the leader of her own fan club. Throughout her life, she was known for her magnetic energy, kindness, and passion. She continues to serve as a role model to young Hispanic, Chicanx and Latinx women across the globe. As we watch her emotional performance of "No Me Queda Mas" at the 14th Annual Tejano Music Awards today, we celebrate the life and lasting legacy of the "Queen of Tejano": Selena Quintanilla-Pérez.

In honor of Hispanic Heritage month, this week we will be highlighting the life and career of Javier Busto. Javier is a Spanish choral music composer and conductor. He founded the Kanta Cantemus Korua in 1995, an all women’s choir. He also created the Eskifaia Choir in Hondarribia, Spain. Javier’s compositions and choirs have participated in many competitions and has received worldwide recognition. If you have not listened to his music, I recommend his arrangement of O Magnum Mysterium.

Today is the first day of Ramadan! Muslim students all around the world will be observing Ramadan during the academic year for the first time in a decade. If you are a non-Muslim musician and/or educator, you can support our Muslim friends by:

- Offering evening exams
- Rescheduling lessons as needed
- Traveling with them in the late evening
- Facilitating safe and comfortable worship environments
- Taking the time to become educated about the holiday and the faith, or
- Taking the time to educate others if you do celebrate this holiday!
- Etc.

Happy Ramadan!

Today, members of CCSU ACDA had the opportunity to meet choral director and composer Jacob Naverud! His work “Lunar Lullaby” was highlighted at this year’s ACDA National Conference in Kansas City, and we can’t say we’re surprised to see it again at this afternoon’s reading session! Conference attendees performed many of his works under Naverud’s direction, including “In the Silence”, “Ad Astra”, and “The Song We Sing”. We’re so happy to have had this experience! A huge thank you to Rachel Allen for organizing this wonderful session!
