A bit of history about the old national anthem, now made new again:-

The picture is that of Lillian Jean Williams, the woman that composed Nigeria's first national anthem titled "Nigeria, We Hail Thee". She was a British expatriate who as at then lived in Nigeria.

The anthem was adopted on October 1st 1960 during the celebration of Nigeria’s independence. Its music was composed by another Briton named Frances Berda.

Below are the lyrics👇.

Stanza 1

Nigeria we hail thee,
Our own dear native land,
Though tribe and tongue may differ,
In brotherhood we stand,
Nigerians all, and proud to serve
Our sovereign Motherland.

Stanza 2

Our flag shall be a symbol
That truth and justice reign,
In peace or battle honour’d,
And this we count as gain,
To hand on to our children
A banner without stain.

Stanza 3

O God of all creation,
Grant this our one request,
Help us to build a nation
Where no man is oppressed,
And so with peace and plenty
Nigeria may be blessed.

However, the old national anthem of Nigeria faced many criticisms, one of which was its composer not being a Nigerian. The Daily Service, a newspaper run by a political organization, Egbé Ọmọ Odùduwà, even launched a rebellious campaign against the national anthem which led to a committee being established to collect signatures as a petition.

“Nigeria, we hail thee” ceased to be the national anthem of Nigeria in 1978 after it was replaced by a new one composed by Ben Odiase, an Assistant Commissioner of Police and the then Director of Music of the Nigerian Police Band.

Six things to know about new National Anthem “Nigeria, We Hail Thee”

President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday, May 29, signed the National Anthem Bill 2024 into law.

The bill seeks to reinstate the old anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee.”

A final assent to the passage of the bill will bring about a shift from the now-recognised, “Arise O Compatriots.”

Here are things to know about the old National Anthem “Nigeria, We Hail Thee”

1. “Nigeria, We Hail Thee” was used from independence in 1960 until 1978.

2. “Arise, O Compatriots,” was adopted in 1978, replacing “Nigeria, We Hail Thee.”

3. “Nigeria, We Hail Thee” was adopted as Nigeria’s first national anthem on October 1, 1960.

4. The anthem’s lyrics were written by Lillian Jean Williams, a British expatriate who lived in Nigeria when it achieved independence.

5. Frances Berda composed the music for “Nigeria, We Hail Thee.”

6. On May 23, 2024, the House of Representatives passed a bill to revert from the current anthem to Nigeria, We Hail Thee.

What Happened To Terry G ?

The Ozzy Osborne of Nigeria, AKA Akpako Master, AKA Ginjah Master, AKA Hitman, AKA Terry G.zuz

Born Gabriel Oche Amanyi, on the 17th of March 1986, in Benue State Nigeria, popularly known by his stage name Terry G, is a Nigerian rapper, singer, songwriter and record executive.

He popped into the music scene in 2006, and has been described by The Punch as "one of the world's weirdest singers", by Vanguard, and by Channels TV as the "craziest musician in Nigeria".

Through his songs, he has admitted to using drugs and alcohol.

He recently shared a video on his verified Instagram account, in which he was lamenting about how he was ignored by fellow artists.

Speaking in pidgin, he voiced his grievances, saying:

“But this isn’t fair. You write to your fellow artists, they don’t respond. Remember when it was my time, all of you came to me, and I gave you guys hits. Now I reach out, and you don’t respond. Is it that until I pass away, you’ll remember me?”

On another of his Instagram post that followed shortly, in 2024 Terry G announced that he was done and had quit music without specifying any reasons.

On 31st March 2024, the ever controversial Terry G spoke again, in a teaser of an upcoming episode of The Honest Bunch Podcast and said:

“I am a secular musician. I sing for the devil. We [secular musicians] sing for the devil, we praise the devil. We don’t glorify God.”
