Dharma Ocean New York

Dharma Ocean New York

A New York sangha of lay meditation practitioners in the Vajrayana lineage of Chögyam Trungpa.

The Dharma Ocean lineage is dedicated to the practice, study and preservation of the teachings of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche and the Kagyü/Nyingma practice lineage he embodied, as passed down through the noted practitioner and scholar, Dr. Reggie Ray. This sangha gathers to practice bodywork and somatic meditation presented by Dr. Ray, who was one of Trungpa Rinpoche's first students in North America. More information about Dharma Ocean can be found at www.dharmaocean.org.

Sutrayana Mahayana 2024
February 3rd through April 6th

Tibetan Buddhism teaches that without a clear and accurate understanding of Buddhist philosophy, what we call “the view,” we naturally default to conventional thinking and the biases of ego.

For this reason, a close study of the extensive teachings of Mahayana, especially on emptiness, is a necessary foundation for meditation practice and especially for the Vajrayana path.

This upcoming Sutrayana course provides us with an opportunity to address gaps in our conceptual understanding, which will then benefit our ongoing practice and our confidence in fully living the journey.

The main curriculum is taught by Reggie Ray, with Senior Teacher Callista Brown leading live classes along with live study and discussion groups led by Dharma Ocean instructors.

Finding a Way

Today I was exercising in our tiny kitchen, using the small step stool that I normally use for reaching the high shelves and my husband remarked, “Good for you! You’re finding a way.” He meant finding a way to exercise and stay healthy in the midst of this pandemic. But I started to realize that this phrase is a rich and potent phrase that applies to much more that getting exercise in a tiny New York apartment. It is often said "We'll find a way" when one is up against an obstacle where there doesn't seem to be a clear way forward. It is an encouragement to ourselves to have faith in the unknown and unseen processes of life even as it may seem that we are up against it.

The organization of Dharma Ocean has folded and therefore, this small New York arm will no longer hold the name of Dharma Ocean New York. Our new name is Somatic Wisdom Meditation Group.

We call it Somatic Wisdom because what we aspire to is being able to listen deeply in order to hear and allow the wisdom of our being, which is housed in our bodies, to come forth. We will continue to use the somatic meditation practices as a way to allow this--the meditation practices that are part of a Vajrayana lineage and that allow us to free ourselves from getting caught in the hamster wheel of conceptual thinking and find a way towards a saner, more grounded, open way of living.

In writing this, I became curious about the word wisdom, which comes from the word wise. The history and etymology of this particular word have mentioned that as it has been passed down through other languages, it holds the meanings of “to know”, “to see”, and “to show the way.” And so it is by practicing somatic meditation that we can come to know, to see and be shown the way.
