Just received a WhatsApp message from a very excited, super happy Dorcas. Today, for the first time, she assisted in the delivery of three healthy babies by Caesarian section. The experience makes the fast approaching completion of her Clinical Doctor program seem all the more real and makes all her hard work worthwhile.

On July 3, 2021 Dorcas and a few select others from her program attended a seminar event in Morogoro focused on how to serve as public health workers in Tanzania. Dorcas has reported that the event was very worthwhile having met students from other school. It was a wonderful opportunity to network and make connections.

We wish Lydia (L) and Agnes (R) the best of luck as they start high school (Form 5) this week. We are grateful to their sponsors for their continued support of these girls over the past ten years...since Standard 3 in 2012! They have taken full advantage of the opportunity you have provided.

Dorcas is months away from completing her Clinical Doctor training program. For the next month she will be participating in a field studies assignment at a hospital in the Nkuranga district on the outskirts of Dar es Salaam. She is so excited to be putting the knowledge she has gained over the past few years into practice. The residents of the area are fortunate to have such a caring, responsible, informed clinical doctor seeing to their health care needs.

After PDG Rick Caron’s presentation on the Tanzania Project of the Rotary Club of Windsor (1918) to the Rotary Club of Taylor, Past-Presidents Therese Maggioncalda and Linda Newsome made donations to purchase wheelchairs for Hezron (left) and Gidion (right) so that they are better able to enjoy life and attend school. Many thanks to Assistant Governor Timothy Massawe in Tanzania for his work in the purchase and delivery of the wheelchairs on our behalf.

All students affected by the fire at Sangiti School now have a mattress upon which to sleep, tranker locks for their personal belongings, and shoe brushes. “The school received the items with great joy!” It took three trips to Sangiti School for Timothy to deliver all of the items purchased with the second installment of fire relief funds donated by our generous community of supporters. The first installment replaced the bedding, clothing, and school supplies of our sponsored students, Ester, Suzan, Magreth and Debora.

Asanteni sana! The response of our community of supporters, and in particular Rotarians, to the devastating fire at Sangiti School has been overwhelming. We are so happy to announce that donations received so far have been enough to not only replace the possessions and bedding of our sponsored students but to also make a very nice contribution to the rebuilding efforts of the school. Knowing that people so very far away care and are concerned about their well being, will help Ester, Suzie, Magreth Debora and other Sangiti students through this traumatic ordeal.

Rebuilding the school will be a slow process but its administration, staff, students and the community are committed to doing whatever it takes to remain open. It’s not too late to donate so if you are able to make a contribution to the school please go to https://rotary1918.com/page/donate, specifying TZ Initiative - Education Sponsorship as the intended purpose of the donation. A donation in any amount would help considerably. Your donation is tax receiptable.

It all began with “What’s going to happen to Mary’s girls?

In the summer of 2009, Julie Caron participated in a volunteer abroad program in the rural village of Boma Ng’ombe Tanzania, East Africa. She was placed in a small foster-home run by one of the most inspirational women she had ever met - Mary Massawe - a single mother of two girls and care-giver to 8 other orphaned or neglected girls she had taken into her home to feed, educate and love. Inspired by Mary’s passion and commitment to improving the lives of children living in precarious circumstances, Julie returned to Canada motivated to help Mary in her efforts. Less than two months after returning home, Julie received some very sad and shocking news from Tanzania. Mary had passed away from spinal meningitis as a complication of AIDS. Determined to keep Mary’s spirit alive Julie communicated with Timothy and Joyce, Mary’s siblings and together they took up Mary’s cause. Fundraising efforts were formalized through the creation of partner organizations, CWEF Tanzania in Canada and the Saidia Agriculture and Social Care Organization (SASCO) in Tanzania.
