THE HISTORY OF ALIS
The roots of Altamont Lutheran Interparish School, which was dedicated on January 31, 1960, reach as far back as the mid 1800’s. St. Paul “Blue Point”, northeast of Altamont, had a Christian Day school in operation since it began in 1869. Immanuel has also supported a Christian Day School since it began, agreed upon in a meeting held on February 2, 1874. Although there are no records available to show when the original school was built for the Bethlehem Lutheran School south of Altamont, they do show that the school was divided into two rooms in 1884. The new school was built in 1961. In 1887, a parish school was organized for the Zion congregation. The current ALIS building was dedicated on January 31, 1960, for congregational members of Immanuel. This was a four room school with a gymnasium and cafeteria. However, in 1973, an interparish arrangement with St. Paul “Blue Point” was established. With the increased enrollment, two additional rooms were built onto Immanuel’s school. In 1987, students from Zion and Bethlehem Lutheran Church congregations began attending the school. Thus, in 1989, four more rooms were added to the north, giving each grade their own self-contained room and individual teacher. Two classrooms, teacher workroom, and storage were added to the center.
