Frugal Family Finds

I had fabulous roll models...my Mother & my Aunt so I learned from the best!

When I was a single Mom, I looked for ways to make my $$ go farther so I did my own sewing repairs and knit & crocheted and cooked/canned everything from scratch.

Here’s the scoop on Lake Simcoe lake trout and lake whitefish!

Our science staff have outfitted some adult Lake Simcoe lake trout and lake whitefish with acoustic transmitters to better understand fish habitat preferences and movement. Acoustic receivers positioned throughout the lake record tagged fish that swim near them. Some fish also have special sensor tags that transmit depth and water temperature.

You can help:
• report tagged fish: watch for a tag behind the dorsal fin or an internal transmitter
• practice live release whenever possible
• return transmitters from kept fish so they can be reused

Your help is appreciated and helps ensure your future fishing opportunities!

Report your catch at ontario.ca/page/fish-tags.

The war has begun! no electricity and no food! You canned meat and lunch in jars! you will survive!
1. Prepare your meat: Choose lean cuts of meat such as chicken, beef, or meat. Trim excess fat and cut into chunks or slices.

2. Sterilize your jars: Wash jars and lids in hot, soapy water and rinse well. Place them in a large pot of boiling water for 10 minutes to sterilize.

3. Pack the jars: Fill sterilized jars with raw meat, leaving about an inch of space at the top. Add any desired seasonings, such as salt, pepper, or herbs.

4. Add liquid: Pour boiling water or broth over the meat, leaving about half an inch of headspace at the top of the jar.

5. Seal the jars: Wipe the rims of the jars with a clean, damp cloth to remove any residue. Place sterilized lids on the jars and screw on the bands tightly.

6. Process the jars: Place the filled jars in a pressure canner and process according to the recommended times and pressures for your altitude and type of meat.

7. Store the jars: Once processed, remove the jars from the canner and let them cool completely. Check that the lids have sealed properly (they should be concave and not move when pressed). Store in a cool, dark place.

8. Enjoy your canned meat: When ready to eat, simply open the jar, heat the contents, and enjoy a nutritious meal, even in the midst of a crisis!

Remember to always follow safe canning practices to ensure the safety and quality of your canned goods. Stay prepared and stay safe! 🥫🍖🌟
