It's a tough living for owls in the Rockies right now...

The weather here in the Tetons is far more akin to late January than April 1 and I find it astonishing that something like this, even with such perfect adaptations, can survive it. It was doing fine before presumably spotting a mouse in the headlights of a car moments before...

GG's dinner shoes held through ninja moves through waist deep snow to sn**ch her up, and, as the Teton Raptor Center was closed for the evening, I blew the dust off of my old U of Minn Vet School Raptor Center course notes, ugly-bandaged the damaged wing to stem further injury and tucked her into a quiet corner for the night.

Damn.

A lifetime ago, before a return of the horse and distant adventures pulled me from raptors and writing, I'd seen these injuries, and they don't bode well. Despite respect-inspiring adaptability, the margins of thriving for wild things are razor thin, and they deserve the respect of a rather ruthless integrity.

Integrity is a strange thing, isn’t it…?

We know fixing or losing one car-struck Great Horned Owl isn't going to move the big needle much, but that shift of needle is absolute for the individual in our grasp.

That's so damned hard.

So keep on doing your good work, even knowing when true integrity to your thing before you means you will have the joyful release back into the wild, or it means requiring the excruciating dignity of letting it go - knowing you’ll get out of bed tomorrow to face the dilemma again

The winner of the coin toss could pick one foal from one of two of Chenery's mares, Hasty Matilda and Something Royal.

Mr Phipps called heads and won. He picked Hasty Matilda's filly leaving Penny Chenery with the losing toss and the second foal - an unborn chestnut with three white feet, born this day, March 30 53 years ago.
