Cricketers of the Mighty Murrumbateman Baggy Blues!!

Very proud of our efforts yesterday and this season, even though we didn’t get the result we wanted. A big thanks to our supporters, especially the great relationship we have established with Brent Lello and the Eagles 🦅 Aussie Rules Club.

The proof that people are enjoying their cricket and putting in the hard yards is seen in the number of people playing with injuries - when they could easily stay home. A special thanks to Dad’s Army of Walking Wounded for digging deep.

We’ll have more opportunities to reflect on our club season over the coming weeks, especially with the March 23 Awards Night at the Tavern. Make a note in your calendar not to miss the Night of Nights. [P.S. I’ve found an Awards Category for each player, much as I despise the ‘every child wins a prize’ philosophy].

Stay tuned for announcements!!

Saturday 10th February saw Murrumbateman Cricket Club hold its annual club dinner at the Historic Merryville Homestead, which is just outside Murrumbateman and Yass in New South Wales.

Held towards the end of the regular season registered club members and their guests, catch up to socialise, meet new members and to pay recognition and give thanks to those individuals that give support to enable our members to play and therefore the club to exist.

A fine evening was had by all those that were in attendance. Ning & Robert Clark were the most gracious hosts who effortlessly put on a delicious feast of cheeses, local produce and of course a stunning setting.

The venue comes most recommended. Check out their link below.

The 2023/24 cricket season saw the rebirth of the “Baggy Blues” Murrumbateman Cricket Club so it was only right that a few speeches were given during dinner.

Special thanks and recognition was observed to our current Club President Fred Clark and to Vice President & Club Secretary Simon Walstrom for their dedication and effort to bring the club back to compete today and for the future generation of Murrumbateman.

When they shook hands in front of a roaring fire six months ago at the Murrumbateman Pub- Murrumbateman Country Inn they worried if they could even get a team together every week! Let alone hold a night such as this in the 1st season back.

Anyway, after the more sensible members of the club had retreated to their warm and comfortable beds for the evening, a few remaining members staggered off to the billiards room for a serious and competitive game of snooker. The game was accompanied by one member playing the piano whilst two other members stood gracefully with a drink in hand (next to said piano) singing (badly) to some Billy Joel ditties damaging the concentration of those playing snooker.

Pictures unfortunately came out blurry or were destroyed. So look to attend the dinner next year, especially if you can sing and play the piano.

The club trains on Thursday evenings at the Murrumbateman recreation grounds, from 1730 to 1900 – so we can teach you the cricket thing there. All welcome.

Thanks to our sponsors

Murrumbateman scored 237 with Dave Fitzpatrick top scoring with 73.

Defending this total in the summer heat took all 40 overs. Bookham finished on 226 in their 40 overs. A hard fought win away!!

Lawrence Rowe!!!

He's the only cricketer in Test cricket history to score a century and a double century on debut, which he did against New Zealand in 1972, scoring 214 and 100* in respective innings. Two years later, against England in the Kensington Oval, he scored his career-best 302, becoming the second West Indies cricketer to score a triple century in Test cricket. During the same series, he scored another couple of centuries. 19 innings into his career, he had already scored six centuries, which included a triple and a double. He averaged 70.33 at that point.

Unfortunately, he had several issues that held him back. Such as issues with eyesight, different other injuries, and even an allergy to grass. He finished his Test career with 2047 runs at an average of 43.55. Later, he was banned for life by West Indies cricket (the ban was later lifted) for his participation in rebel tours to South Africa. Despite all that, his teammate, Michael Holding, once stated that he was the best batsman Holding ever saw. Even Sir Garry Sobers believed he could have been the greatest of all West Indian batsmen.

Here's wishing a very happy birthday to former West Indies batman Lawrence Rowe. The man who was nicknamed "Yagga" is turning 75 today.
