Nourishing souls with self-compassion and dessert Hi everyone! For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Lindy.

I’m a Marriage and Family Therapist, Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor, and an avid baker. My family taught and inspired me to be creative in the kitchen. Favorite hobbies: researching recipes, shopping at Trader Joe’s, licking beaters, and sharing my food with others. I love being in my kitchen and creating food from scratch. My goal is to raise awareness of diet culture, inspire cooking ideas

5th annual make-my-own-belated-bday cake 🥳

Chocolate cake with hazelnut praline ganache filling, salted caramel Swiss meringue buttercream, and candied hazelnuts.

I dealt with some challenges on this one 😅 but was grateful that I learned so much in the process.

These chewy, fudgy brownies are the ultimate!
Brown butter gives them a nutty hint of caramel. High quality cocoa powder gives a deep, rich hit of chocolate.
After 10 years of making these brownies, they are still my favorite.

With the rare opportunity to celebrate this year, I decided to start experimenting with these mini babkas!

Traditionally braided with a chocolatey spread, these are filled with pumpkin and fall spices instead.

I can’t get over these fun size loaves and muffins 🤗

Stay tuned for limited quantities available during Hanukkah, which starts on the night of November 28!

There isn’t much that I love more than receiving treats and making treats for others! When I started making my own birthday cake a few years ago, it felt unnatural. I was so used to giving my energy to friends, family, and clients but not myself.

This lil tradition began in 2018 with a Trader Joe’s themed bday party. I decided to attempt my own cake with cookie butter frosting. The cake decorating felt like a disaster (while the party was absolutely incredible!). My inner critic was loud, but putting in that creative effort for myself on my special occasion was empowering. The self-nurturance that came from that effort reassured me of my worthiness and made my mistakes feel less glaring.

Sometimes I get a chuckle of disbelief from others when I share that I’ve been making my own bday cakes. My theory is that we rarely put substantial effort into our own creativity and pleasure. We make time for so many things, like our families, physical health, education, and career development, but it seems that our personal pleasure often comes last.

I've gained a lot of lessons from my baking challenges over the years. My troubleshooting is more accurate. My process is more enjoyable when I remember that the result doesn't require perfection. My mistakes have allowed me to grow and learn. My inner critic is slowly turning into an honest friend who can giggle with me about the lopsided cake, or bizarre design that doesn't look quite like I imagined. I know I can try again (or decide not to if I really hate the process!)

These lessons are partly what led me to become an Intuitive Eating counselor, which incorporates self-compassion into how we eat and nourish our body.

Perhaps my cake tradition will shift as life shifts, but for now it’s become a really enriching part of my life!

I believe that self-compassion can apply to any creative outlet. In case this inspires you to treat yourself to a cooking project, here is how I plan mine:

-Think about dishes, flavors, and textures that sound exciting to you, and/or ingredients that you have on hand.
-Use Google/Pinterest for help with ideas and inspiration. I like to find bloggers and recipe developers who have made something similar with my ingredients.
-Watch videos to learn new skills.
-Give it a shot! It can be helpful to have a plan B if the dish doesn't work out.
-Accept that you will make mistakes. Accept the very valid disappointment. Give yourself kudos for trying something new. Identify which aspects of the process you liked and disliked. Reach out to the recipe developer or community with questions. Know that you can try again in the future when you're ready.
