We can make history but history moulds us for future. It was not a long since we have been under the British rule. Thus a delegation led by Sri. K. Sri. The Govt.
If we glance at the history of Karivellur, we can see the Lord-Tenant system, which sowed the seeds of resurrection among the tenants and the downtrodden common folk. We the people of Karivellur also played a vital role in the Freedom Struggle by dedicating some of the martyr’s life for the sake of our motherland. During their hardship also they dreamt of a school at high school level for brighten
ing the future of the coming generation. AV Kunhambu along with Sri. Govindan, then Secretary, KPCC and Sri. K Govindan Nair met the then Chief Minister Sri. E M S Namboodiripad and Education Minister Prof. Joseph Mundeseri and expressed the long cherished wish of the people of Karivellur to get a Govt. School established at Karivellur. Putting asides the untold hassles and insurmountable hurdles the Govt. finally sanctioned a high school at Karivellur, a boon from the first communist ministry of Kerala. Thus the long felt need and cherished dreams of the people of Karivellur was brought to fruition. High School was inaugurated on 23/06/1958 by Smt. O.C.Chinnamma, the then DEO, Kasargod in a small rented premise of Sri. K.Narasimha Bakthar at Pallikowal, Karivellur as a single teacher institution. K.T.N Sukumaran Nambiar was the one and only Teacher and the Head Master of the School. Soon after the commencement of the school, a welfare committee was constituted in the leadership of Sri. A.V Kunhambu as president and Sri. K.Govindan as Vice- President to acquire the requisite Land and Funds for furnishing a permanent structure to the school. K Krishnan Master, Sri. Koliyadan Narayanan Master, Sri. K.T.N Chindan Nambiar, Sri. Thottan Valappil Kunhiraman, P Narayanan Nair, P.P.Chandan Kunhi, M.P. Appu Master ,K.chandankunhi Master,T.Govinda Poduval, N.K Naru Unithiri Master,P. Kunhappan Nair etc. were the other members of the welfare committee. Chirakkal Kovilakath Smt. Seetha Devi Thamburatti whole-heartedly gifted her extensive plot on free of cost to the welfare committee of the School. Thengunthara Kunhikrishna Poduval also contributed a small area of land on free of cost to the committee. Pudhiya VaniyanVeettil Kammaran Karanavar also conveyed his rights on a small area of land for a nominal cost to the welfare committee. After accumulating all these plots and satisfying the rights, title and possession of the required extend for a High School; the committee again approached the entire people of Karivellur to contribute their mite with open hands and replenish the funds for the construction of a School building. The dedication and social commitment of the older generation had its result. A few classrooms were built in the new premises and the school was started in full swing. Unfortunately Sri. A.V.Kunhmbu, who was the light and soul of the mission passed away on 08/06/1980. Then his close associates represented the matter before the Govt. of Kerala and requested that the School be renamed as his memorial. The request was granted and the School was renamed as A.V.Smaraka Govt. High School in 1981 and is still functioning as the Lodestar in the firmament of Education, a living testimony to the generosity, dedication and determination of our ancestors, bringing to our minds the famous lines.
“Lives of great men all remind us, we can make our lives sublime and going leave behind us foot prints on the sands of time.”
Let’s hope that the present generation will continue to uphold the lofty ideals of their forebears and dazzle the world for generations to come. The school was upgraded as higher secondary school in 1991 with the commencement of a Science batch at the Plus two levels. In 1997, one more science batch was also sanctioned as per the requisition of the school authority. A batch of commerce group and humanities group were also sanctioned in 2004, 2005 respectively. Thus, the majority of students’ needs and dreams for Higher Secondary Education became a reality.
