Selamat siang,
Good afternoon,
Did you know that Indonesian has loan words from various languages, such as Dutch, Arabic, Portuguese and Sanskrit? This happens because Indonesia's history is rich with cultural interactions from various parts of the world. For example, the word "sepatu" (shoes) comes from Dutch, "kamar" (room) from Arabic, and "meja" (table) from Portuguese.
But, that's not all! Indonesian also has unique words that are difficult to find equivalents in other languages. For example, "jelangkung" which is a typical Indonesian doll which is believed to have supernatural powers, or "cangkir" which is used to refer to small drinking containers.
Let's explore its beauty and uniqueness together!
