Join us for an inspiring conversation with Mr. Molock Terry, the visionary founder and general manager of General Unen Choit Cooperative, based in the heart of remote Tewai-Siassi District of Morobe Province, extending into Kabwum District and Madang Province. In this enlightening interview, Mr. Terry shares his remarkable journey from a young man facing educational challenges to a transformative leader dedicated to uplifting his community through coffee.
Despite limited formal education due to school fee issues, Mr. Terry returned to his village after high school with a mission to revive old coffee gardens and establish a cooperative. His dream was to offer the children of Tewai-Siassi a brighter future and to foster self-reliance among his people, moving away from dependence on government aid or living in an urban settlement.
Unen Choit Cooperative now boasts 1,750 committed farmers (plus hundreds more who are not members), including many youth and women, who cultivate, process, and market top-quality coffee adhering to international Fairtrade and NASAA organic standards. These efforts ensure that families can support their childrenโs education and improve their standard of living.
The cooperative generates about K10 million annually, exporting coffee to markets in Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, and Europe. Mr. Terry discusses the challenges facing Unen Choit, such as high freight costs and the need for their own coffee mill to secure an export license, while also envisioning a prosperous future for the coffee industry in Papua New Guinea.
Be inspired by Mr. Terryโs dedication and the transformative impact of Unen Choit Cooperative on rural communities. He can be contacted on mobile or WhatsApp (675) 74347190

In this insightful interview, Reuben Yapi, Chairman of the Morobe Primary Producers Cooperative Association (MPPCA), emphasises the urgent need to revive the cooperative movement in Papua New Guinea.
Mr. Yapi recently attended the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) Capacity Building Workshop on Cooperatives in the Asia-Pacific Region in Fiji. He observed that cooperatives are a significant driving force for economic development in the region, while PNG is lagging behind.
During the colonial era, cooperatives were instrumental in PNG's development. However, they have diminished in recent times. MPPCA represents hundreds of rural Morobe farmers who have banded together after years of neglect. The region is known for producing high-quality coffee, cocoa, and vanilla. Despite this, farmers face significant challenges in bringing their produce to market due to inadequate transport and infrastructure.
In this interview, Mr. Yapi discusses these issues and the potential solutions to help revive the cooperative movement in PNG.

๐ฐ The Legendary Muriel McGowan Larner Returns to Rest Beside Her Beloved Husband ๐ต๏ธ
The remains of legendary Australian woman Muriel McGowan Larner (pictured), a born and bred Papua New Guinea girl who ran Arau Coffee Plantation in Eastern Highlands for 40 years after the death of her husband and was a household name around Kainantu, have been brought back to be laid to rest beside her beloved husband.
Murielโs family have brought back her ashes to be laid to rest beside her husband, Wally, who died at a young age in 1967, at the Kainantu Cemetery on Monday, July 15, 2024. The people of Arau will host Muriel's daughter, Rosalie, and grandsons for a "haus krai" planned for Saturday, July 13, where the return of her ashes will be honored by the people of Arau village who remember her with much fondness and respect.
After that event, Muriel's ashes will return to Kainantu on Sunday, July 14, in preparation for the Eastern Highlands Cultural Centre event on July 15. The interment at the Kainantu Cemetery alongside the grave of her husband, Wally Larner, will take place later that day.
Muriel Larner was born in Rabaul in 1929, and spent her childhood, youth, and entire working life in PNG, moving to Arau with her husband Wally to establish one of the first coffee plantations in the Eastern Highlands in 1957. She worked tirelessly to develop coffee production at Arau plantation and also to cultivate pottery, traditional art forms, fabric design, screenprinting, weaving, clothes design, and production, first at Arau and then later in Kainantu at the Eastern Highlands Cultural Centre which was officially opened in November 1981.
To say that she is fondly remembered in the Kainantu region and Arau and its surrounds would be an understatement. She is venerated.
Muriel was born in Rabaul in 1929, moved to Australia during WWII, and moved back to Port Moresby after the war. She was also the founder of the Eastern Highlandsโ Cultural Centre, Kainantuโs most famous tourism product, which lives on to this day. Prime Minister Hon. James Marape today launched the National Agriculture Sector Plan (NASP) 2024-2033, emphasising the importance of employment creation through agriculture in Papua New Guinea.
In his address, Prime Minister Marape highlighted that agriculture has been a core part of the Pangu Patiโs policy framework since PNGโs Independence in 1975. He noted that under the leadership of the founding Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare, the party prioritised agriculture to drive the country's economic growth. The government at that time implemented policies to protect peopleโs rights to their traditional land, a policy that remains upheld by the current Pangu-led Government. The present administration is committed to encouraging Papua New Guineans to lease their land for commercial agriculture.
The NASP 2024 โ 2033 aims to create opportunities for all, including youth and women, and to improve the quality of life in rural villages, transforming them into economically vibrant communities.
Prime Minister Marape also announced the Governmentโs intention to provide funding support of up to K1 billion for the NASP 2024 โ 2033. He urged all districts and provinces across the country to develop land for agriculture, reinforcing the governmentโs commitment to the sectorโs growth and sustainability.
