The Danger Of Envy

Toxic people live in a chronic state of envy. It may not seem obvious because most of them seem so self-assured.

When someone lives from a chronic state of envy, they are in an unspoken competition with everyone they meet, every driver on the road, their own family, their friends, their co-workers; you name it. They need to be better than everyone.

These types are always judging others as below them, and are constantly berating and criticizing even those who they are supposed to love, nurture and support.

Because they live in envy, they are easily triggered into feeling like they have to push others down in an effort to feel a sense of their own “worth.” Ultimately they have no “worth.”

Envy repressed turns to jealousy, and jealousy is known to be most violent of all the emotions. Why? Jealous people seek to destroy those things or people they envy. It’s out there but no one talks about it. We are afraid of what society will think of us if we tell our truth.

The bottom line, healthy people aren’t meeting other people with a measuring stick of judgement, and then strategizing on how to bring them down.

Healthy people are in relationships with people because they want to love and be loved. It is bizarre to a healthy person that someone could be so toxic that their mode-of-operation in a relationship is only to seek, use and destroy.

Envy is most easily recognizied as competition, comparison, being constantly cut down, and being told we’re too sensitve or mean when we react.

If you’re going through this, the person isn’t loving you, they are competing with you to destroy you. They hate that you have the good healthy qualities that they will never be able to possess, so if they cannot have them they want to rid you of them.

Richard Smith categorises admiration as an other-focused assimilative emotion, leading people to aspire to be like (assimilate to) those they admire. He contrasts admiration with envy (an other-focused contrastive emotion), proposing that envy leads us to feel frustrated about the competence of others, while admiration is uplifting and motivating.
