EMERALDS SET FOR RETURN TO BENDIGO
24 SEP
2019
By David Penrose
The Emeralds, presented by Boral, will bring international women’s baseball to Bendigo in October when they face a team from Japan at Strathfieldsaye Recreational Reserve.
Australia’s national women’s team will play a seven-game series against a Japanese All-Star team from October 2-6.
The Victorian Government and City of Greater Bendigo have both put their support behind the event, which will build on last June’s successful Bendigo Challenge.
Baseball Australia chief executive Cam Vale was thrilled to bring top-level baseball to Bendigo again.
“Last year’s series between the Emeralds and Japan served not only as an important event for both nations ahead of the World Cup but a chance to showcase top-level baseball in a regional area,” he said.
“The community got behind the series and showed their passion for our sport so we’re thrilled to bring another seven games to Bendigo in 2019.”
The series will mark manager Jason Pospishil’s first games at the helm of the Emeralds and serve as an important step in their preparations for the 2020 Women’s Baseball World Cup.
Australia will select 29 players for the five-day event.
“It promises to be another vital event in the lead-up for the next World Cup as the Emeralds enter a new era,” Vale said.
Vale said the support of the Victorian Government and City of Greater Bendigo had been instrumental in the Emeralds returning to Bendigo for a second-straight year.
Victorian Tourism, Sport and Major Events Minister Martin Pakula was thrilled to secure the Emeralds’ return to the state.
“It’s fantastic that we can attract events like this to Bendigo and other regional centres – it sets Victoria apart and it’s a key reason that we are the nation’s premier sporting state,” he said.
City of Greater Bendigo tourism and major events manager Terry Karamaloudis said the event the event was a win for Bendigo.
“Last June’s Bendigo Challenge was a huge success and a wonderful opportunity for our region to enjoy world class baseball,” Karamaloudis said.
“We are delighted to provide support once again as the Emeralds take on world number one Japan this October.
“Based on the popularity of last year’s event, this seven-game series is likely to be a big draw card for visitors and the community to enjoy all of the action at Strathfieldsaye Recreational Reserve.
October’s series is part of a three-year agreement between Baseball Australia and the Victorian Government to showcase international women’s baseball in the state.
The schedule and team rosters for the 2019 Bendigo Challenge will be released this week on Baseball.com.au.
Entry to the games will be free.
