Poem: The last time!

From the moment you hold your baby in your arms,
You will never be the same.
You may wish to be the person you were before,
When you had freedom and time,
And nothing in particular to worry about.
You will feel tiredness like you have never felt before,
And the days will turn into exactly the same days,
Full of feedings and burps,
Diaper changes and crying,
Whining and struggling,
Naps or lack of naps,
It may seem like an endless cycle.

But don’t forget...
There is a last time for everything.
There will come a time when you will nurse your baby for the last time.
They will fall asleep on you after a long day, and it will be the last time you hold your sleeping child.

One day you will hold them in your arms and put them down,
And never again will you hold them in that way.
You will wash their hair in the bath one night
And from that day on, they will want to bathe alone.
They will hold your hand to cross the street,
Then they will never ask for it again.
They will sneak into your room at midnight for hugs,
And it will be the last night you wake up to that.

One afternoon you will sing “The Wheels on the Bus”
And do all the choreography,
Then you will never sing that song to them again.
They will give you a goodbye kiss at the school gate,
And the next day, they will ask to walk to the gate alone.
You will read one final bedtime story and stay in the room until they fall asleep.
They will run to you with their arms raised for the last time.

The thing is, you won’t even know it’s the last time until there’s no more of that moment.
And even then, it will take a while for you to realize.

So while you are living these moments,
Remember that there are only a few more of them
And when they are gone, you will long for just one more day of them.
For the last time.
