Where Joe Mauer stands in the Hall of Fame vote 19/12/2023

Will Joe Mauer be a first-ballot of Hall of Famer?

Mauer, on the ballot for the first time this year, needs 75% of the vote to be inducted into Cooperstown, and although it's early, the former Minnesota Twins star is off to a good start.

Ryan Thibodaux, an unofficial Hall of Fame ballot tracker, has so far counted 17 votes for Mauer from the 21 ballots that he's tracked. Nineteen votes have been publicized, including Jon Heyman of the New York Post voting for Mauer, while two ballots so far have been released anonymously.

The changing face of America’s favorite sport 18/12/2023

THE CHANGING FACE OF AMERICA’S FAVORITE SPORT:
How race, politics, culture and money are shaping which kids abandon tackle football -- and which keep risking its toll.

But when it comes to actually playing tackle football — and risking the physical toll of a sport linked to brain damage — there are wide divisions marked by politics, economics and race, an examination by The Washington Post found. And as the sport grapples with the steep overall decline in participation among young people, some of those divisions appear to be getting wider, The Post found, with football’s risks continuing to be borne by boys in places that tend to be poorer and more conservative — a revelation with disturbing implications for the future of the sport.

While participation is falling almost everywhere, The Post found, boys in the most conservative, poorest states continue to play high school tackle football at higher rates than those in wealthier and more politically liberal areas. The politicization of the concussion crisis is forging deeper divisions between those who support youth football and those who don’t. And while precise data about football’s racial makeup is hard to come by, the demographics appear to be gradually shifting. Among kids and teens, White and Black males are playing tackle football at declining rates, while Hispanic boys increasingly take up the sport. In college, the proportion of White players is declining, and that of Black players rising, at faster rates than national demographic changes. Washington Post

Team’s Sale Reflects Growing Links Between Pro Sports and Gambling
The proposed purchase of the N.B.A.’s Dallas Mavericks by a casino operator is the latest sign of how fully leagues have embraced the gaming world.

Yet at a time when sports gambling — once done only in casino meccas like Las Vegas or through bookies — has been legalized in dozens of states, the leagues’ former approach seems quaint. While restrictions remain on players, referees and owners wagering on their own sports, gambling has otherwise been embraced by the mainstream sports establishment.

They have removed restrictions on casinos and sports books advertising in stadiums and on television. Some stadiums, like FedEx Field in Landover, Md., the home of the N.F.L.’s Washington Commanders, have sports books inside. Sports wagering companies now plaster their names on sign boards in stadiums and buy TV commercials during games, including the Super Bowl, with all manner of promotions to woo new customers. Raiders look like a new team after Josh McDaniels was fired, blast the Giants 06/11/2023

The Las Vegas Raiders looked reborn, a few days after Josh McDaniels was fired.

The Raiders cleaned house. They fired their head coach and general manager Dave Ziegler, and benched quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, one of the only times you'll find a team making midseason changes at the three most important spots in a franchise. It worked, for at least one week.

Las Vegas destroyed the New York Giants 30-6. The game was never competitive. The Raiders looked like a team that was hoping its recently fired and unpopular coach was watching at home.

The Raiders players and reportedly even coaches blasted McDaniels in what will go down as an infamous team meeting. Their performance Sunday was a direct message to their fired coach. Yahoo Sports

Streaming companies chase Spanish-language sports rights to capture growing Hispanic viewership 06/10/2023

Streaming platforms are chasing live sports rights to grow their audiences. Increasingly, those audiences are watching in Spanish.

Media companies that were already geared toward Hispanic audiences, like TelevisaUnivision and fledgling Canela Media, are bulking up on sports rights and content, while traditional English-language streamers, like NBCUniversal’s Peacock that features Telemundo content, Disney’s
ESPN+ and Amazon’s
Prime Video are adding simulcast content in Spanish.

It’s an effort to diversify viewership and advertising opportunities — and to capitalize on a growing Hispanic streaming audience.

“Sports is the pinnacle of premium content that can really help a streaming service,” said Shirin Malkani, co-chair of the sports industry group at law firm Perkins Coie. “If you offer it in Spanish as well as English you may not be doubling your audience but you’re certainly growing it by a large percentage. You are reaching an audience I would argue maybe we haven’t done a great job getting sports content to.” CNBC

Dolphins' offense flourishes in Year Two with Mike McDaniel 25/09/2023

The Dolphins exploded against the Broncos on Sunday, in the third game of the second season of the Mike McDaniel era.

As running back Raheem Mostert explained it to PFT after the victory, the Year Two improvements are the biggest reason for the team’s success.

“First off, I think the O-line really improved,” Mostert said by phone following the 70-20 outcome. “We carried over from last year and we understand this scheme now. You know, we’re in the second year now and we’re just trying to get everything in order and situated. We’re trying to play complete ball.”

It was as complete as it could get for Miami against the Broncos. It also helps that quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is more comfortable in his second year with McDaniel. NBC Sports

Inside Rams rookie Puka Nacua's historic NFL start, as WR has shown Cooper Kupp-like polish 18/09/2023

He's former BYU star Puka Nacua, new record-holder of the most catches (25) to begin an NFL career through two games.

He was my No. 199 overall prospect -- Nucua was picked at No. 177 overall -- and like most of us, probably including the Rams, I did not envision such a blisteringly hot start to his professional career. Here's a little snippet of my pre-draft scouting report on Nacua.

"Good-sized, sneaky YAC wideout with plus ball-tracking capabilities. Doesn't have the juice or the burst out of his breaks to be a major separator at the next level but has a natural feel for the utilization of his body as a shield with a defender near him... Natural runner with great vision and deceptive contact balance... Runs hard and will mostly maximize what's blocked for him. Used on screens/jet sweeps often in his offense, which is where most of his production came from. Strong, natural hands. Some release ability at the line but not a high-caliber athlete or super powerful through contact. Sneaky after the catch weapon with the ball-tracking skills teams want out of perimeter receivers."

If Minnesota keeps sliding, why not?

As with any potential blockbuster trade, there are hurdles that would need to be cleared. But there are too many logical connections here to write off the possibility, especially if the Vikings' winless streak continues. (The Chargers and Chiefs are two of their next three opponents, for what it's worth.) How Coco Gauff Flipped Her Game to Win the U.S. Open 11/09/2023

In Saturday’s final, the champion overcame Aryna Sabalenka’s formidable power with indefatigable defense.

Defense is perhaps the least-talked-about aspect of tennis. It’s not quantifiable, like the number of aces. It’s not readily captured in the highlight videos that tend to get uploaded on social media. In an era in which the game is ever more athletic, and punishing offensive shots are struck under pressure from almost anywhere on the court, it can be hard to tell when a player is defending. At its starkest, great defense is simply—but not so simply—the ability to get one more ball back over the net which has no business getting back over the net, and to keep doing it. That, more than anything else, is what earned Coco Gauff the U.S. Open women’s championship on Saturday. The New Yorker

Fanatics, ESPN are trying to beat the house: FanDuel, DraftKings 29/08/2023

As online sports betting booms, Fanatics (most recently valued at $31 billion) and ESPN (the worldwide leader in sports) have taken seats at the increasingly crowded table.

Why it matters: Many have tried and failed to take on the duopoly that leads the $220 billion online sports betting industry, but these two giants could pose a meaningful threat.

What's happening: Fanatics, which launched its own sportsbook in four states earlier this month, is expected to close its $225 million acquisition of PointsBet's U.S. business this week, which will eventually give it access in 16 states.

ESPN, meanwhile, entered the space with its $1.5 billion deal with Penn Entertainment that will rebrand Penn's Barstool Sportsbook into ESPN Bet starting in November.
State of play: FanDuel and DraftKings — the undisputed leaders — both got in early and have expanded along with the market. Axios

The Columbus Dispatch paused use of an artificial intelligence sports writing tool after a Westerville football recap faced criticism on social media that went viral last week.

State of play: For several days this month, the Dispatch and other Gannett-owned newspapers published dozens of LedeAI game recaps based on simple box score data.

One such Dispatch article from Aug. 18 was blasted on social media for its robotic style, lack of player names and use of awkward phrases like "close encounter of the athletic kind."
"I feel like I was there!" The Athletic senior columnist Jon Greenberg posted sarcastically.

The video of what many concluded had been an unwanted smooch was widely shared on social media, spurring confusion among many Spaniards and prompting others to denounce it as highly inappropriate behavior. Some called it disgraceful and evidence of lingering sexism in soccer. Others demanded that Mr. Rubiales resign. The New York Times

What the Pac-12’s Demise Means for College Hoops 10/08/2023

The instability of the Pac-12 could benefit the Mountain West, which has earned four NCAA tournament bids in consecutive years and sent San Diego State to the national title game in 2023. If nothing else, it increases the league’s chances of holding onto the Aztecs, a widely rumored expansion target for the Pac-12 before last week’s events. A straight merger between the two leagues would make for an entertaining league out west, albeit one whose floor from an NCAA tournament-bids standpoint could be as low as one to two in down years. If the Pac-12 instead attempts to respawn with new schools, it will likely be poaching largely from the Mountain West, which could leave some in that league in a similar spot to where the four Pac-12 holdovers sit now.

Biggest winners and losers from the MLB trade deadline 02/08/2023

WINNERS
Texas Rangers

Texas has a legitimate chance to win its first World Series in franchise history. Houston looks more vulnerable than it has in previous years, which means the division is incredibly winnable. The American League lacks a true juggernaut, which means the path to the Fall Classic is relatively favorable.

And the Rangers are no fluke.

They have the AL's best offense and run differential, thanks to a deep and formidable lineup capable of making a deep October run. Unfortunately, what appeared to be a fierce rotation has been bit by the injury bug, and now the Rangers sit just a half-game up on the surging Astros. Consequently, Texas' front office sensed an opportunity and pounced. There is a time to be aggressive and for the Rangers, the time is now.

Max Scherzer isn't what he once was — his 4.01 ERA would be his highest mark over a full season since 2011, no thanks to 23 long balls allowed — but he's, at worst, a league-average starter capable of the occasional dominant performance. And when you take into account his Cooperstown pedigree and all his ... "Scherzer-ness," he's a no-brainer addition for a Rangers team gunning for glory. FOX Sports

Padel, racket sport played in at least 90 countries, is gaining attention in U.S. 20/06/2023

One racket sport that's been picking up steam internationally for years is now gaining attention in the United States. It's not tennis, squash, racquetball or pickleball. It's padel, which reportedly got its start in Mexico in the 1960s, and is now played in at least 90 countries.

Padel is played two-on-two, and all serves are underhand. Players can use the turf court and glass walls to their advantage.

One of padel's highest-profile fans is three-time Grand Slam tennis champion Andy Murray, who has put his own money into the sport with an investment in a padel company in the U.K., Game4Padel.

What is the sport's appeal to him?

"There's obviously a bit of crossover to tennis," Murray said. "But it's probably a little bit easier, a bit more forgiving on the body. But still, you know, it's fun, it's competitive, it's good exercise. It's a great game to play socially.

Four thoughts on the "Hot Girl Problem" of NIL 20/06/2023

"There is no such thing as ‘the NIL market’ and we do readers a disservice if we pretend there is one.

There is one market, primarily but not exclusively, for football and men’s basketball players, where donors funnel large amounts of money via collectives to encourage athletes to either attend a particular school or remain there. The payments are not about the individual marketability for the athletes. These are not brand deals, these are not endorsement contracts, and they’re not meaningful about the name, image or likeness of the athlete. Call it ‘roster value’, call it Bagman-ing, call it a tiny bit of financial justice for economically exploited athletes. But it shows up in print as NIL.
Then there is another market, an actual NIL market, where brands, camps, and other firms engage in economic activity with college athletes because they think doing so will provide professional and economic value. When I pay an athlete $350 bucks to write a newsletter, I am participating in this marketplace. When an energy drink partners with the Cavinders because they want access to their gazillion-person TikTok following, they’re in this marketplace."
