On the occasion of the nineteenth centenary of the accomplishment of the redemption of mankind, as a fitting celebration of this ineffable blessing, Pope Pius XI decreed an extraordinary Jubilee. During that year the Supreme Pontiff, wishing that the fruits of the Precious Blood of Christ, the Lamb without spot, might redound more abundantly upon mankind and that the minds of the faithful be impressed with more vivid recollections of this same Blood as the price of their redemption, elevated the Feast of the Most Precious Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ to the rank of a double of the first class, to be celebrated as such every year by the universal Church.

Almighty, eternal God, Who made thy only-begotten Son the Redeemer of the world, and willed to be reconciled by His Blood, grant us, we beseech thee, so to worship in this sacred rite the price of our salvation, and to be so protected by its power against the evils of the present life on earth, that we may enjoy its everlasting fruit in heaven.

Hoty Thursday Tenebrae
As we enter the Triduum, and as our Lenten observances reach the height of their focus and intensity, the Norbertines of St. Michael's Abbey want to extend an invitation to join us (in-person or via livestream) for Tenebrae.
โ
The liturgy of Tenebrae (Latin for "darkness"), which dates back to the ninth century, is a special expression of Matins and Lauds unique to Holy Week. The psalms chanted during Tenebrae ground Our Lord's Passion in the context of Salvation History.
โ
The candles on the hearse, extinguished one by one during the liturgy, serve as a powerful and plain metaphor to illustrate the unfathomable severity and sadness of Our Lord's Passion. Tenebrae and the livestream will begin at 6:15 AM Pacific on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

For those who are celebrating Valentine's day today, may we all remember that there was a saint associated with that celebration.

The Church honours, on this fourteenth day of February, the memory of the holy Priest, Valentine, who suffered martyrdom towards the middle of the third century. The ravages of time have deprived us of the details of his life and sufferings; so that extremely little is known of our Saint. This is the reason of there being no Lessons of his Life in the Roman Liturgy. His name, however, has always been honoured throughout the whole Church.

Praesta, quaesumus, omnipotens Deus: ut, qui beati Valentini Martyris tui natalicia colimus, a cunctis malis imminentibus, ejus intercessione, liberemur.
Grant, we beseech thee, O Almighty God, that we who keep the birthday of thy blessed Martyr Valentine may be delivered by his prayers from all the ills that hang over us.
Notes on Fasting and Abstinence
1. Abstinence means refraining from eating the meat from mammals or fowl, and soup or gravy made from them. This does not apply to dairy products, eggs, or condiments and shortening made from animal fat.
2. Fasting is the taking of only one full meal and two smaller, meatless meals that don't equal the large one meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids are allowed, including milk and fruit juices. Fish and all cold-blooded animals may be eaten (e.g., frogs, clams, turtles, etc.).
3. Fasting and abstinence are obligatory on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday under the pain of mortal sin. Traditionally it is highly recommended to extend the fasting and abstinence on all Fridays of Lent, but this is now optional.
4. Abstinence is obligatory on all Fridays of Lent and is recommended on all Fridays throughout the year.
5. The law of abstinence binds all Catholics, beginning on the day after their 14th birthday. The law of fasting binds all adults (beginning on their 18th birthday) until the midnight which completes their 59th birthday.

We are again to begin our 40-day journey of Lent this coming Wednesday. Lent is not just having ashes on our foreheads and suffer a little fasting on Ash Wednesday and be back with rigors on Good Friday! These coming 40 days were set by the Church so that all her members would make a concentrated effort to renew their own spiritual vigor. Prayer, fasting and almsgiving provide an opportunity for us to reappraise our goal and direct course.
With this in mind, we have prepared small daily steps to provide a practice and a prayer for each day during this Lent. Each step will consist of three parts: 1) a thought worth pondering on during the day, selected from the Liturgy of the day's Mass; 2) a resolution or practice flowing from this thought; and 3) a related prayer which can serve as a reminder of both thought and resolution, if repeated frequently during the day.
Lent is not just like any other ordinary days of the year. Let's make it different and let us avail of its spiritual fruits, so we can present ourselves to Our Lord on Easter renewed and strengthened members of his Mystical Body.
Don't forget to attend mass tomorrow, Ash Wednesday. It's a holy day of obligation. Thanks.

The praises of Cyril of Alexandria have been celebrated not only by one writer or another, but have even been registered in the acts of the Ecumenical Councils of Ephesus and Chalcedon. He was born of distinguished parents, and was the nephew of Theophilus, Pope of Alexandria. While he was still young he displayed marks of his excellent understanding. After giving a deep study to letters and science he betook himself to John, Bishop of Jerusalem, to be perfected in the Christian faith. After his return to Alexandria, and the death of Theophilus, he was raised to that see. In this office he kept ever before his eyes the type of the Shepherd of souls as it had been laid down by the Apostle; and by ever adhering thereto deservedly earned the glory of an holy Bishop.
Zeal for the salvation of souls was kindled in him, and he undertook all care to keep in the faith and in soundness of life the flock unto him committed, and to preserve them from the poisonous pastures of infidelity and heresy; hence, in accordance with the laws, he caused the followers of Novatus to be expelled from the city, and those Jews to be punished who had been induced by rage to plan a massacre of the Christians. His eminent care for the preservation of the Catholic faith pure and undenled shone forth especially in his controversy against Nestorius, Patriarch of Constantinople, who asserted that Jesus Christ had been born of the Virgin Mary as man only and not as God, and that the Godhead had been bestowed upon Him because of His merits. Cyril first attempted to convert Nestorius, but when he found this hopeless he denounced him to the Supreme Pontiff the holy Celestine.
As delegate of Pope Celestine, Cyril presided at the Council of Ephesus where the Nestorian heresy was condemned; Nestorius deprived of his see; and the Catholic doctrine as to the unity of Person in Christ and the divine Motherhood of the glorious Virgin Mary was laid down amid the rejoicings of all the people, who escorted the bishops to their lodgings with a torch-light procession. For this reason Nestorius and his followers made Cyril the object of slanders, insults, and persecutions which he bore with profound patience, having all his care for the purity of the faith, and taking no heed to what the heretics might say or try against him. At length he died a holy death, in the year of salvation 444, and of his own epicopacy the 32nd. After vast work for the Church of God, and leaving behind him diverse writings directed either against heathens and heretics or to the exposition of the holy Scriptures and of Catholic doctrine, the Supreme Pontiff Leo XIII. extended to the Universal Church the Office and Mass of this most eminent champion of the Catholic faith, and light of the Eastern Church.

Deus, qui beatum Cyrillum Confessorem tuum atque Pontificem divinae maternitatis beatissimae Virginis Mariae assertorem invictum effecisti: concede, ipso intercedente; ut, qui vere eam Genetricem Dei credimus, materna eiusdem protectione salvemur.
O God, Who didst make thy blessed Confessor and Bishop Cyril to be an unconquered teacher that the Most Blessed Virgin Mary is Mother of God, grant unto us that through his prayers we who believe her to be Mother of God in very deed may find safety under her motherly protection.
- FEAST OF THE REPARATION AGAINST THE SACRILEGE COMMITTED TOWARDS THE BLESSED SACRAMENT (Feast proper to the Benedictines of the Perpetual Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament)
The Feast of Reparation of Insults Offered to the Most Holy Sacrament is traditionally commemorated on Thursday after Sexagesima.
This feast invites us to atone for the outrages inflicted on Our Lord Jesus Christ in the Blessed Sacrament. St. Louis de Monfort tells us to "Make honorable amends to Jesus dishonored even in a sacred place" because of the blasphemous attitude of some of the people towards the Blessed Sacrament.
