The Matildas have inspired the next generation of kids. This presents us with a great opportunity to grow participation in the sport.
Last year, girls represented just 15% of the players at our club. We would love to see this grow to 50% over the next 4 years. This aligns with Football Australia and Football Tasmania’s goal of 50:50 gender participation by 2027.

In 2024 the Eastern Region Junior Soccer Association (ERJSA) is looking to trial a girls league in the form of a combined U8/U9 competition.
Girls born in 2015 or 2016 will have the opportunity to nominate for a girls team when registering. If the ERJSA can obtain enough teams, a combined U8/U9 girls league will be formed.

We would love to field a Howrah U8/U9 all girls team this season and be a part of this brand new league.
In 2024 ERJSA is looking to trial a girls only league.
There are a great many considerations we must think about in implementing a change of this nature, and so we will be limiting this to girls currently aged 7 turning 8 AND girls currently aged 8 turning 9 in 2024.
It will also be optional, meaning girls in this age range may continue to play in the mixed competition should they wish to do so.
Assuming we obtain enough numbers of players and teams, this will result in a combined U8/U9 mixed age all girls league. Games will be played at Edgeworth following our normal 7 aside rules.
Clubs will work to adjust gradings based on the makeup of each team and we will have an opportunity to adjust this after round 5 when we complete the remainder of the roster as part of our usual process.
If clubs and ERJSA do not receive enough registrations for this league, then all player registrations will default back to our usual format of a mixed competition across all age ranges.
A key date for players to be registered this year is the 8th of March; so, while registrations are not yet open, be sure to have your child registered before this time.
The registration process will provide you with the opportunity to flag your child’s interest and your CLUB is your point of contact should you have any questions or wish to discuss this further.
Girls outside these age ranges (and ones inside these age ranges should they choose to) will remain in our usual mixed competition.
Depending on the outcome of this change and the impacts it may have, we will reassess options in years going forward to continue to look at ways of adjusting and growing our participation based social competition further to better meet the needs of our clubs and players.
