Workout to Conquer Cancer
Moving everyday in May to raise funds for the BC Cancer Foundation. Together, we are stronger than cancer.
This May, join thousands of British Columbians who will move every day to help change cancer outcomes and honour those who have been affected by the disease. Whether you walk, run, bike or dance, you can make an impact. Funds raised will advance life-saving innovations to research and care for patients in B.C.
“Cancer touches us all, either directly or through someone we love.”
For Jessica Cheng, whose mother is a two-time cancer survivor, it was the latter.
After witnessing her mother face cancer twice, Jessica committed to supporting cancer research through Workout to Conquer Cancer. She participated in the month-long event from 2017 to 2019, before taking a break to welcome her second daughter. This year, Jessica returned with “renewed energy and determination to embrace this fitness challenge” alongside her new team and Workout warm-up sponsor, & Friends.
As May comes to a close, Jessica reminds participants, “Every step we’ve taken this May is a step towards hope, healing, and a future where cancer can be conquered for good.” 💜

For Susan and team Miles for Myles, who lost their 15-year-old namesake in 2021, Workout to Conquer Cancer is a way to honour Myle’s legacy.
“Workout to Conquer is a way to keep Myles close, to make him proud, to make his terrible journey with cancer not be completely in vain. It’s a way to honour and cherish all of our memories of Myles and get out there and do something to make a difference for other families.”

For Sean, who is moving in support of his mom, Ann, Workout to Conquer Cancer is the perfect way to combine his passion for exercise and cancer awareness.
“I never thought my family would be the one to deal with cancer. Unfortunately, there’s probably many people who feel the same way. It’s an ever-growing issue around the world and the more we can raise funds and awareness, the more we can help people like my mom.”
Kelly Davidson, team captain of Kelowna’s Cancer Kickers and provincial chair of the Foundation’s Catalyst Ambassadors, is rallying the Kelowna community to raise life-saving funds for the Foundation through Workout to Conquer Cancer. 💪
With donor support, BC Cancer – Kelowna has grown into an internationally recognized hub of innovation. The centre’s achievements are helping improve outcomes for patients in the Okanagan and across the province.
The month-long fitness and fundraising challenge has become a way for Kelly to connect with her friends, peers at Odlum Brown Limited, and the wider Kelowna community to share this important message – and have some fun working out at the same time.
“It’s exciting to feel you’re really part of the change happening at BC Cancer. The beauty of Workout is anyone can do it, every dollar raised makes an impact and together we’re making a difference."

For Dalerina, Workout to Conquer Cancer is a way to bring people together and connect through movement – which she believes is medicine.
“Moving our bodies every day makes us more resilient. It is truly a conduit for our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being.” Not to mention, exercise has been proven to reduce your risk of many different types of cancers including breast, colon, stomach and endometrial (uterine) cancers.
This May, Dalerina tapped into exercise’s ability to heal even more, dedicating her month of workouts to her dear Aunt Angelina, whom she recently lost to cancer.
Participating in their fourth Workout to Conquer Cancer — and the second since losing their 15-year-old namesake — Team Miles for Myles is even more determined to move every day this May.
Myles began experiencing stomach issues in the fall of 2020. Instead of enjoying his first year of high school or doing what he loved, he was vomiting several times a day and lost 20 pounds. In March, he was admitted to hospital and diagnosed with Stage 4 diffused gastric carcinoma, a stomach cancer rarely found in young people.
“None of us knew how to help,” says Myles’ Aunt Susan. “We’d heard of Workout to Conquer Cancer, so we decided to form a team.”
In three years, Miles for Myles has raised more than $420,000 for the Foundation, specifically for PROFYLE (Precision Oncology for Young People), the young adult arm of the Personalized Onco-Genomics (POG) program. This year, their goal is to bring their four-year total to an incredible $600,000 — a number that would have blown Myles away.
“Workout to Conquer is a way to keep Myles close, to make him proud, and to make his terrible journey with cancer not be completely in vain,” says Susan. “It’s a way to honour and cherish all of our memories of him and get out there and do something to make a difference for other families. It’s what Myles would have wanted; it’s his legacy.” 💜

🚨 Have Your Donations Matched!🚨
Starting today, Monday, May 13, the first 240 participants to fundraise $250 or more will be matched with a donation of $250 towards their fundraising efforts! This is all thanks to an extremely generous donation from a BC Cancer Foundation donor, the Wan Family Foundation.
Sean Collins will be running for 12 hours on a treadmill on May 11 to raise funds and awareness for cancer research and care. He’s aiming to have all six treadmills at Kin Culture filled for the entire day, for 72 hours of continuous movement.
For Sean, co-founder of Kin Culture, Workout to Conquer Cancer was the perfect way to combine his passions for exercise and cancer awareness.
He signed up for the challenge to support his mom, Ann, who was recovering from breast cancer treatment back home in Ireland. But the challenge took on a new meaning when he learned she had been diagnosed again as he was planning his fundraiser.
“For the past five years, she has never complained and is so positive, even when she’s in pain. She always says ‘I want to workout. I want to play tennis.’ I’m constantly inspired by her strength and wanted to find a way to make a difference for others.”
Kin Culture is rooted in community, and for Sean, Workout to Conquer Cancer is another way to create community – this time as a place of hope for those affected by the disease.

Dalerina and Rohan D’Silva are Bollywood dancing their way through the month-long Workout to Conquer Cancer challenge to raise funds for the BC Cancer Foundation.
“I started participating in Workout to Conquer Cancer because I saw an opportunity to make a difference while doing something I love,” says Dalerina. “Little did I know that it would be a great platform to bring people together and connect through movement.”
A celebration of Indian culture, music and cinema, Bollywood dance often includes synchronized choreography that is fast paced, requires agility, coordination and stamina – in other words, expect to sweat.
And expect to fall in love, warns Rohan, as it’s about more than just exercising. The upbeat rhythm, the storytelling through dance and the connection to a vibrant culture and community, “it just makes you want to be a part of it,” — much like Workout to Conquer Cancer.
