Total freedom to innovate: Enza Zaden

We need vegetables which contribute to a more sustainable world. At the same time, people love strong, healthy vegetables that can endure.
Our challenge is to satisfy these different needs. We are off to a flying start with our EasyQ. Crunchy, more flavorful, lying unwrapped on the supermarket shelf, and lasting longer than wrapped cucumbers. On top of reduced plastic waste, this also results in less food waste. π₯π₯

Letβs create value together! π
Nearly 30 years ago, Jan Velema had the vision of creating an organic world. In those times, the importance of organic food production was not a widely held view.
Still, Jan persisted in chasing his dream. When he met Enza Zaden, it was clear that they shared a common vision, and in 1998 our company became a majority shareholder in Vitalis. This gave Jan the power to innovate and expand his activities.
By combining the organic spirit of Vitalis and the innovative power of Enza Zaden, it grew into Europeβs largest organic breeder and producer of organic vegetable seeds. Today, Vitalis is 100 % owned by Enza Zaden.

βBreeders are allowed to be a bit stubborn. Stay off the beaten track, it's already so busy there. Innovation happens elsewhere.β
π
In the 80s, our creative, quirky breeders created the vine tomato Campari (Tasty Tom) as an experiment. It didnβt do much since it didnβt fit within a clear category.
π
Then, in the early 90s, the Dutch tomato industry faced criticism for their tomatoes' lack of taste, with the German market calling them Wasserbomben β water bombs! Suddenly, our Campari took off, creating a completely new market segment and revolutionizing taste in the industry. It helped improve the image of Dutch tomatoes, and many more varieties followed.
π
And Campari is still going strong after 25 years β which is truly an exception in the vegetable breeding business!

π¬ Enza Zaden co-founded KeyGene, now one of the world's biggest biotechnology companies.
𧬠Through KeyGene, we could, for example, conduct DNA analysis, simplifying the selection of varieties with the right traits. In the 90s, we were able to build our laboratory and do this kind of research within our company.
β Nowadays, we combine our breeders' expertise, experience, and creativity with modern, highly advanced techniques, saving a lot of time in the entire breeding process.

ESCAPE - ideal for cool season and main shoulder season production. Escape is a quick, dark green semi-savoy variety with full Pe:1-19, high resistance (HR) against downy mildew
β©With the rise of biotechnology, the breeding sector saw new opportunities to speed up the breeding process β by several years! β and to improve the seed quality and production. So more than ever, significant investments were needed for innovation in vegetable breeding. On our own, we were too small to make the significant investments that this fundamental research required.
π‘Enza Zaden had the idea of combining forces with the other small family-owned seed companies to share the costs of pre-competitive research and allow each company to work with the results to create new breeding products. And so, in 1989, KeyGene was born: a unique collaboration between Dutch seed companies that is active across several continents.

Around 1987, Enza Zaden relocated its breeding activities in the Mediterranean region from Crete to Spain.
Our new location in Almeria, blessed with an excellent breeding climate, rapidly expanded in the 80s to become Europeβs most important horticultural area for vulnerable winter crops. This enabled retailers to provide a year-round supply of vegetables in all the Northern European countries, where consumers could finally enjoy them every day of the year.
