A great final day of the new setup of the Firth of Clyde league was played yesterday with Cowal golf club hosting their home fixture. The match was very kindly sponsored by Ross McArthur Contractors Ltd and both Cowal golf club and FOC league would like to thank Ross for his generous sponsorship. The weather was very good and Cowal golf club turned out their course in as good a condition as can be expected with all the rain that has dropped with all players commenting how good the greens are. The final day was very exciting with both Port Bannatyne and Rothesay starting off on 8 points, there were so many twists and turns that happened throughout the day that the impossible looked possible with Cowal having a chance to win the league. Port Bannatyne got off to a really strong start with Donald Standaloft and Ian shaw defeating Steven Higgins and fraser mckillop 4&2 in game 1. Fraser Mcdonald and Donald McKay managed a very hard fought half match against George Reynolds and Ian White in game 2. Unfortunately for Port Bannatyne none of the remaining games could come up with a win and the point changing game between the Port and Rothesay went Rothesay's way with Allan Par Smith and Craig charker beating Graham Fisher and Graham Dunn 5&4. Rothesay had now done enough to secure the league for 2017 and with Ryan Mckirdy and Stephen Reynolds also winning their match rothesay finished on 10.5 points. Cowal had a very good day and won 3 of their games along with the half match got them into a share of second place along with Port Bannatyne on 9 points. The FOC league would like to thank Cowal golf club for the use of their course and for the lovely catering that we had. We were unsure at the start of this years league if the new setup was going to work and if the league had a future but it proved to be a great success and we are looking forward to next years competition and we might even manage to attract some more of the original clubs back into participating.
