Tall, stately linden trees are popular landscaping trees because of the scent of their flowers and their heart shaped leaves. But this landscape tree is also an herbal ally in disguise!
LINDEN--The tall and stately linden tree can perfume an entire neighborhood with its scent when in bloom. The fragrance of linden is popular in commercial bath and toilette products, particularly in France, where it’s often known as tilleul. Linden has been used widely for its calming and anxiolytic effects, and is even used in children for this purpose. Bathwater infused with linden blossom has been used traditionally as a remedy for anxiousness, irritability, or restlessness to foster a calm and relaxed state for adults and children alike. Internally as well, an infusion of linden flowers is used in many cultures for people of all ages as a soothing nervine or gentle sedative draught for quelling anxiety, hyperactivity, or insomnia (King et al., 1898). As an infusion, linden has an agreeable aroma and flavor, owing to its content of aromatic essential oils and tannins, and it combines well with other herbs in tea blends.
Linden has a long tradition of medicinal use in Europe, and is included in the Commission E Monographs and the World Health Organization’s Monographs on Medicinal Plants Commonly Used in the Newly Independent States, as well as in the official German, Swiss, and British pharmacopeias. Linden is often used for colds, flus, and bronchitis, and associated chest congestion and fever. Linden is commonly used as a diaphoretic to induce sweating and alleviate fevers associated with colds and flus. The German Commission E approved linden flower (Tilia cordata and T. platypus) for colds, and coughs associated with colds, and the German Standard License for linden flower infusion indicates its use for alleviating respiratory irritation from coughs due to catarrh, and for inducing a sweat to break cold-related fevers. Likewise, the British Herbal Compendium lists upper respiratory indications for linden such as irritable coughs, catarrh, and common colds, as well as restlessness and hypertension. Several diaphoretic tea blends for reducing influenza-related fevers in children are described in the Commission E which contain linden, along with herbs such as meadowsweet flower, willow bark, chamomile, orange peel, and elder flower (Blumethal et al., 2000).

Garlic! This little beauty is an antibiotic. If you have the sniffles, half a bulb, take the cloves like "pills" to help get rid of them. Coupled with a honey and lemon tea, you will be feeling better and sniffling less in just a few days.
