We are heartbroken to say goodbye to a great friend and a true support of Screen Porch Productions. Nancy Rees was a woman who knew how to step in and get things done. She was the first person to sign up for the Older Adult Theater program and played roles in all of the Reader's Theater performances. Nancy went on to be Assistant to the Director for four of our Original Musical Dinner Theater Productions. This role included being at every rehearsal encouraging and prompting the actors, setting up all the production elements, helping serve the dinner, clean up and most importantly, providing a strong shoulder for me to lean on. Nancy was also co-director of our large-scale community event, "Love our Waters". She was truly amazing and we could not have done it without her. Nancy, thank you for everything, your legacy in the arts in our community lives on!
Thought it would be fun to re-share some of performance photos from our Original Musicals!
From 1999 to 2010 (12 years!), SPP created and implemented an in-school Fine Arts and Drama Program at the Emily Charter School. This 6-8 week program happened twice a school year and was for all students, 4-year olds to 6th grade This was a crowning achievement for us having the most and best impact on our community that continues to reverberate today. We are so grateful to the staff of the Emily Charter School for believing in the true value of the Arts and in Screen Porch Productions to deliver!
The project that really launched Screen Porch Productions was commissioned by Kirk Myers of the Northeastern Education District as part of their gender equity/ non-traditional career program. We were tasked with creating an original theater performance that addressed these issues in a unique way. Based on the book of the same name, "The Failing Tradition" was a 50-minute play performed for seven regional high schools. The cast and crew were all high school students from Northland Remer's Drama Group. " Doing the research, I was stunned to learn that I had been part of the failing tradition", says director and playwright, Therese Kunz, " the creating of this project took a very personal turn. It also became very personal for the high school students performing these scenes and I'm hoping some of them will comment about it below."
Our Story.
What is the story we want to tell about this nonprofit community art organization that has thrived for over 22 years in rural north central Minnesota?
Should we tell our story chronologically? Or should we go about it through the telling of dreams fulfilled? We've decided on both. Every month we will post a story about our history and yes, it will be chronological starting with our first big project . . . stay tuned.
We honor a great friend of Screen Porch Productions today. Marlene Smith has always been a light in this community, her beautiful smile bestowed on everyone. She leaves us with a wonderful story about her grandmother in the latest Porch Light, Beyond. We are grateful to have known her and loved her.
Here is Act 2 from Ten Thousand Things. It contains two more stories from the Porch Light. (Kathy Hachey and Priscilla Dugan.) So well done!

In tribute to our best and most loved fan, Dee Gragert! Dee came to every single performance and every arts event we ever did in our 20 year history. She supported us in every way. We love her and will miss her so much. Lucky for us, Dee has a story in the most recent issue of the Porch Light, 2020, entitled "Camp with Aunt Marie". Recently Ten Thousand Things Theater chose her story for their 'Ten Thosand Voices' video project. This will be out soon and I will post the link here to watch it. A small legacy for a beloved friend.
