Congratulations to Pan Daijing, James Richards, Daniel Lie, and Hanne Lippard for being awarded the Preis der Nationalgalerie.

In 2024, is going to four artists for the first time. The new format of the prize takes up the idea of the exhibition as a collective exchange and aims to expand the collection through the purchase of four new pieces. The prize winners will produce four new works to be shown in a joint exhibition at the Hamburger Bahnhof from April to September 2024.

The Preis der Nationalgalerie is a museum prize awarded every two years in support and recognition of outstanding work by artists under 40 who live in Germany.

We would like to introduce Ghost 2565: Hosts, a docent program in which embodied and situated knowledge of artworks and locations is shared with visitors within and beyond the local community. As part of this endeavor, hosts learn from local community members who have generously shared stories from their neighborhoods and unwritten archives of diverse histories. Hosts provide various entry points through alternative pedagogies of mutual learning, discussion, and reading, turning exhibition locations into dialogical sites where multiple voices to share entangled tales.

Ghost 2565: Live Without Dead Time curated by Christina Li runs from October 12 to November 13, 2022 at venues throughout Bangkok.

Ghost 2565 features moving-image works by Meriem Bennani, Revital Cohen & Tuur Van B***n, Özgür Kar, Lap-See Lam, Li Shuang, Diane Severin Nguyen, James Richards, Shen Xin, Natasha Tontey, Wu Tsang with Tosh Basco, and Emily Wardill and two new film installations by Chantana Tiprachart and Tulapop Saenjaroen.

A variety of live events happen throughout the month-long festival. They include a joint lecture performance by Rabih Mroué and Hito Steyerl, and commissioned pieces that respond to Bangkok’s historical and urban framework, namely a series of audio walks by Orawan Arunrak, a musical architectural intervention by Pan Daijing, and a nighttime gathering around collective dreaming and eating devised by Koki Tanaka.

Ghost 2565: Anthology

This anthology that accompanies the video and performance art series Ghost 2565: Live Without Dead Time features ten new stories in English and Thai by artists and writers that catalyze other subjectivities. The texts follow trails of stories to bring forth those in the margins and read their tales in congruity with the exhibition and performances. By reclaiming disinherited times and spaces—from mundane moments during a day outside to jungles of cyclical temporalities, landscapes, and languages—Anthology is an invitation to look into and outside oneself. The book’s own subjectivity performs a slow self-examination, be it with respect to a neighbour or voyeurship itself, to see how we become more visible in relation to others. Some subjects spiral in these stories, while others attempt to find a way out.

Structured narratives are complemented with texts that are almost spectral, pitting logical consequences against fragmented consciousnesses. Bodily sense returns only when the limits of language are reached, where one must confront protagonists’ choices. The book closes with a return to the familiar, to family, place, and subjecthood. A meander through a maze of yesterday’s lost love is followed by a grasping at order and tradition amidst a cacophony expectations. Dissipating and forming words become worlds; Ghost 2655: Anthology is an entry into gaps within overlapping narratives, seeking ways to invent and inhabit them with writing by Orawan Arunrak, Ivan Cheng, Uthis Haemamool, Travis Jeppesen, Phu Kradat, Li Shuang, Sophia Al Maria, Duanwad Pimwana, Sathit Sattarasart, and Emily Wardill. The book is designed by Pam Virada.
