Thank you Folk & Tumble for the incredible 5* review!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

"Last time Folk and Tumble reviewed OXLIP her mother was a peacock. This time, she’s having conversations with the dead. That’s why we love her – and that super-sense of gothic drama.

Half way between here and some other world, ‘I Said You Must be Leaving’ is as enigmatic, enchanting, ethereal as we’ve come to expect. Her dark Chekhovian twists and turns, intuitive sense of drama, disappointment and the darker emotions are out in full force for this new album of eight strong songs recorded in a four day whirlwind visit to Sonikwire Studios in Los Angeles, with the well-known indie producer Damien Jurado.

“The experience was incredible, Damien is a mastermind, and a hero of mine.”

OXLIP is a mastermind in her own right, and she’s riding on the crest of a remarkable wave of powerful creativity. At last garnering the recognition she deserves. she was a nominee for Emerging Artist of the Year at the 2022 Canadian Folk Awards. Her ability to take themes and mysteries, make them her own to sing the stories of much maligned, abandoned and wronged women. it’s as if she lets those voices into her own soul, and gives these women a voice through her own being. She makes of herself the vessel of truth – in a way few others ever could.

It’s as if something supernatural is at work. “I watched Unsolved Mysteries and wanted to intuit what I believed the victims of a Japanese Tsunami might want to say…” she says about her sixth album.

Cont’d in comments.

Thank you to The Wild Is Calling for this sumptuous review!

"Buzzworthy folk singer OXLIP dropped a new eight song collection I Said You Must Be Leaving. Bare dark classic folk with an eye to tradition, it only hints at an indie folk influence. This the genuine charm known to villagers and commoners, drawing curious attention from the royal court. Oh how delightful this peasant music is. OXLIP sings with the scorn and grief of a war torn widow. Inspired by international tragedy, specifically those linked to the climate crisis, she laments the loss of innocent victims ritually swept by catastrophe. Her inherent draw is natural and organic, leaning into big waves of vibrato in the spirit of traditional folk. In that way her collective works could draw similarities to Allison Krauss, as she is equally eclectic and an amazing asset to producers and purveyors of the genre.

Produced by indie icon Damien Jurado, the new record is crisp and clean to match new sonic demands and industry standards. It also commits fully to the artists main draw, her rare vocal talent. Whereas past releases indulged her metaphorical presence with church hall echo and spiritual intention, the new records looks to bare her emotions in the n**e, accentuating every private detail of her matrimonial affect. As if she’s caressing you to rest, or laying her babe to sleep, the revealing presentation is exhilarating. It only builds on her enigma, and embraces her talents advantageous seductive underlayers.

The whole album is beautiful. Get started with Wayward Woman now on our Emerging Folk Playlist."

And to Canadian Beats for the feature!

Major thanks to the following publications for the glowing reviews of I Said You Must Be Leaving:

The Punk Head:

"From intimate narrations to childlike dances, to poignant lullabies to epic angsty roars, each and every song on I Said You Must Be Leaving had its own ghosts whispering into the creation, as if messages sent to those who needed to hear. A piece of memory lived in the songs and so were the souls, being preserved like photographs." The Punk Head

York Calling:

"Last year’s A Kind Of Premonition impressed me with its emotional storytelling and stripped-back rawness. That’s also certainly true of I Said You Must Be Leaving, but Jayne has also expanded her sound. There’s a rich, etherealness that runs through it, tempered by earthly percussion and made human by Jayne’s hypnotic vocals." York Calling

"..As you might expect from a classically trained Chekovian actress, Oxlip’s sound carries a sense of drama, darkness, feminine disappointment and dilemma. Her voice is so pure and pitch perfect, yet it brings with it a notion that nothing is not quite as it seems – that she stands on the edge of some musical search or quest – ridden with unanswered questions. This is why this idea of psychedelically exploring the traditional suggests cross-generational, spiritual and mindful investigation, linking the past with the present – and making a legacy for future generations (should humanity survive)."

“OXLIP is Northern Irish-born singer-songwriter Jayne Trimble’s moniker for the stage. The name is inspired by wildflowers and woodlands evocative of the darkly-windswept British Isles, alongside a host of literary archetypes ripped straight from the Brontë era. OXLIP has been creating intricate musical worlds in similarly-windswept and coastal Vancouver since 2012. As an artist, she’s inspired by music’s restorative properties as much as she is intrigued by the intricacies of the natural and metaphysical worlds, paradoxes in classical literature, and the complex legacies of Victorian-era gender politics.
🖤
Thanks to Amplify BC’s Career Development program in 2022, OXLIP has indulged these curiosities through the development and release of Come All Ye Fair And Tender Ladies, a studio album that unifies traditional European and North American folk songs with abstract psychedelic elements. This hybrid approach wrests these pieces from the realm of artifice into fresh relief for contemporary listeners. Named for the eponymous American folk ballad first heard in the Appalachian region (and made famous through later covers from Peter, Paul and Mary, Pete Seeger, and Joan Baez, among other 20th century mainstays), the tracks themselves are ethereal and spare. Sitting somewhere between hymn and madrigal in style, they are also largely characterized with the warm sounds of the banjo, the mandolin, and the acoustic guitar, alongside the quiet presence of an organ and synth continuo. Career Development funding has supported the album’s engineering, production, and mastering, alongside the development of artwork and promotional photos in support of its launch. The album – OXLIP’s fifth – saw a mass-market release on May 27, 2022.”
