As the child of 2 screenwriters, I was basically raised in the & joined right out of college (thks to a nepotistic screenwriting deal) the way another boy might join his dad in the pipe layers union. The guild provided healthcare throughout my childhood just as the somewhat more benign deal structures of the era allowed my parents to live upper middle class lifestyles and put their kids thru college. These days, the guild still provides excellent healthcare for my parents as well pensions. My family owes a lot to the . When I was young, I wrote a story for the WGA Journal about spec script sales & how they changed the status of writers. For the worse, I concluded, because they made writers gamblers rather than workers. (See www.pseudonymousbosch.com/power) I quoted Fitzgerald on a studio executive: “He wished that writers could be dispensed with altogether” & I joked that this would require “a divine or robotic force.” Well, now we’ve got AI—one of several existential threats that the WGA is fighting over. “Once there were screenwriters. Now there are screenplays.” I thought the last line of my piece was hyperbole. 30 yrs later, it’s that much closer to truth. Support the strike. Solidarity forever!
