Bridges play an important role in connecting Cleveland's east and west banks.
The first permanent bridge over the Cuyahoga River was built in 1836. Constructed for $15,000 by a group of real-estate speculators led by Jas. S. Clark, the Columbus Street Bridge lead to the so-called Bridge-War between Cleveland and the then-independent Ohio City. Prior to this bridge installation, travelers used a floating bridge that was owned jointly by Ohio City and Cleveland.
The Center Street Swing Bridge is now in the approximate location of this first ever permanent bridge.
