Thrilled to be included in the second edition of 'Artist-Run Europe: Practice / Projects / Spaces', an in-depth overview of the artist-led projects throughout Europe compiled and produced by Pallas Projects/Studios

The book is an exploration into the shared ethos of alternative expository models, and the importance of artist-run projects in supporting early-career artists.

It's really great to form part of this broad, broad community, and see the shared goals and drives that bind us together.

Simon Zabell's exhibition 'Mother of many' marks a new departure in his work: whereas until now he has worked on individual projects, each with a clear beginning and end, the way he approaches his work now is an Intuitive, almost freestyle way of working, moving towards a kind of visual language for his transcription of music.

Mother of many opens online on the 26th of March and will run until the 28th of April.

EXHIBITION NOW OPEN ☄️

Simon Zabell
Mother of many
26 March - 29 April

Music has always played an important role in the work of Simon Zabell. The infinite textures, rhythms and the 'soul' of music fascinate him, be they from traditional Polynesian music, 60s R&B, or the atonal compositions of Karlheinz Stockhausen. Zabell's work is an attempt at 'transcribing' the idiosyncrasies of music into other mediums, particularly painting, taking aural sensation and translating it into visual phenomena.

Mother of many opens online on the 26th of March and will run until the 28th of April.

As part of the exhibition ‘En el mismo río’ Santiago Méndez presents “Mercurio Orinoco”, a 3D video piece which shows the Orinoco River changing from lush green jungle to a deathly, metallic grey. “Mercurio Orinoco” is a response to the contamination of the Amazon with mercury, a key element in the illegal gold mining process. The dystopian scene depicted in the video creates an ecological manifesto, drawing attention to the need for the protection of the ancestral forest and an awareness of the impact of mining on the Amazon ecosystem.

Méndez lives in Caracas. He has worked in editorial photography for almost a decade, which has taken him all over Venezuela. He has a diploma in Latin American Contemporary Art from the Metropolitan University of Caracas (2023).

For the exhibition 'En el mismo río' Ana Alenso presents the video piece "Lo que la mina te da, la mina te quita" (What the mine gives, the mine takes away), which is part of an installation and artistic research project in collaboration with the environmental collective SOS Orinoco. The proposal focuses on the study of the mechanisms of gold extraction as potential sculptural devices for reflection through which it is possible to deepen and decode the internal, anthropocentric and self-destructive logics generated by the current mining activity, not only in Guayana and the Venezuelan Amazon, but also in most of the mining areas of the global south.

Alenso lives and works between Berlin and Caracas. She holds an MFA in Art in Context from the Berlin University of Arts (2015), an MFA in Media Art & Design from Bauhaus University Weimar(2012) and a BA from Armando Reverón Arts University in Venezuela (2004).

🕶️ Happy August! To start the month in style here is a wonderful ceramic piece by Elena Gileva part of her recent solo exhibition "From the Base Going Upwards" with Square Art Projects

The title of the exhibition relates to the process of building up each individual work from its base, each piece a different variation of coiling, layered and intertwined in different nuances. This sense of exploration with the material is continued in the use of glazes: almost every piece has received three or four different layers of glaze before being refired, building up a depth of patina.

🎯 Square Art Projects is delighted to announce our participation at The Manchester Contemporary with a solo presentation of recent paintings by artist Simon Zabell

Zabell's work is concerned with the narrative aspects of painting and installation art. His more recent works are based on research into the musical concept of rhythm and the expressive capacity of deep sounds. These abstractions strive to represent the warm expansion of deep sounds in space and construct fictional architectures where we could inhabit these sounds.
