Gooooyaaa!

When the troubled artist Francisco Goya died in 1828, a series of 14 unsettling murals were found painted directly onto the walls of his home in Spain — including one so violent that it's still referred to as perhaps the most disturbing painting ever created. Now known as "Saturn Devouring His Son," the painting features a massive, grotesque humanoid creature with crazed eyes eating a n**e human figure. Eventually, Baron Frédéric Émile d'Erlanger purchased the house in 1873 and had the murals removed from the walls and transferred to canvas. When "Saturn Devouring His Son" finally appeared before audiences, it was met with shock and revulsion, with one critic calling it "disgusting without much art." Another critic declared Goya to be a "hyena," calling his imagination "a hideous inferno ... a disgusting region ... shapeless as chaos." But despite the intense visceral reactions it inspired, "Saturn Devouring His Son" has endured as a masterpiece that reveals haunting insights about the dark interior life of its creator: https://bit.ly/4aPDYrP

Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528) was a German mathematician, illustrator, painter and art theorist born in the city of Nuremberg, introducer of the art of graphic representation in three dimensions, that is, in perspective, and considered the main figure of German art of the Renaissance.
Dürer's work on geometry is called the Four Books on Measurement (Instructions for Measuring with Compasses and Ruler). The first book focuses on linear geometry, including helices, conchoids, and epicycloids. The second book moves on to two-dimensional geometry, that is, the construction of regular polygons. The third book applies these principles of geometry to architecture, engineering, and typography. The fourth book completes the progression of the first and second, moving on to three-dimensional shapes and the construction of polyhedra. Here, Dürer discusses the five Platonic solids, as well as seven semi-regular Archimedean solids, as well as several of his own invention.
Finally, Dürer discusses the Delian problem and moves on to 'construzione legitima', a method of representing a cube in two dimensions by means of linear perspective. He is considered the first to describe a visualization technique used in modern computers, ray tracing. It was in Bologna, Italy, that Dürer learned (possibly from Luca Pacioli or Bramante) the principles of linear perspective.

He was also familiar with the 'abbreviated construction' described by Alberti and the geometric construction of shadows, a technique of Leonardo da Vinci. He was notably the first Northern European to address issues of visual representation in a scientific way and with an understanding of Euclidean principles. In addition to these geometric constructions, Dürer discusses in his latest book a variety of mechanisms for drawing in perspective from models and provides woodcut illustrations of these methods that are often reproduced in discussions of perspective.

"Geometry is the right foundation of all painting." ~ Albrecht Dürer
