In the United States, women have been told to stay in their place and allow decisions to be made for and about them without their input and leadership. There has been a slow but steady shift in the narrative of how women are slowly making space for themselves at the table, and having an active role in major policy decisions. In honor of Women’s History Month, we want to celebrate diverse Cornell women that are thriving in politics, creating inclusive cultures, and ushering in a new era of organizing and advocacy. CBAA, CLAA, and CAAA are excited to co-host this panel of Women of Color who are making noise and fighting for change. Please join us on March 24th to learn about their professional journeys, challenges, and goals. We hope that the Cornellians that join us leave feeling empowered and excited about intentional civic engagement!

56 years ago yesterday, on June 21, 1964, James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner were murdered by the K*K for registering Black voters in Mississippi and investigating why a Black church had been burned to the ground.

They were arrested at a traffic stop in Philadelphia, Mississippi and detained by local police. When they were released, they were trailed by law enforcement and abducted by Klansmen. Their murder was a coordinated act between Neshoba County Sheriff Lawrence A Rainey, other police officers, and white supremacist vigilantes. Their bodies were only discovered on August 4 — 44 days later.

Their disappearance and murder sparked national outrage, highlighting how state and federal governments were actively enabling white supremacist violence and endangering Black lives.

Today and every day, we mourn Chaney, Goodman, and Schwerner. We honor their legacy. We commit to fighting white supremacy and white nationalist terror in all its forms. We commit to defending Black lives and fighting for a world where all of us are safe, free, and thriving.
