Look Who’s Expanding in Newark

The unique co-working offices at Equal Space are expanding thanks to aid from Audible’s Business Attraction Program as well as Invest Newark’s Retail Reactivation initiative. In addition to the flagship space in the modest, narrow, 8-story historical building at 89 Market Street, the co-founders of Equal Space opened a second location within 550 Broad Street, a swanky downtown office building with modern ceiling-to-floor windows in many of the suites. The co-working spaces primarily serve entrepreneurs of color, women, and members of the LGBTQIA+ community. Going beyond just a place with a desk, chair and a conference room, Equal Space offers podcast studios, and multimedia facilities. The owners are working on a “state-of-the-art event space” for 300 people.

Welcome to Newark HAX!
How HAX is making Newark into a global destination for hard tech startups.

Silana, a company trying to find a way to automate the sewing process — an advancement that would enable clothing to not just be able to be manufactured quickly and more cost-effectively, but also more sustainably — is just the type of company HAX in wants to attract:

- It is based in hard tech;
- It has an environmentally friendly impact;
- It was founded far away (in this case, Austria); and …
- It has huge potential but no guarantee of success.

That’s the profile, said Duncan Turner, a former founder turned global managing director of (and a general partner of its parent company, SOSV).

Speaking Monday at the official grand opening of the 35,000-square-foot lab space on Cedar Street in Newark, Turner said the goal of HAX, the largest venture capital-backed program for hard tech in the world, is to provide opportunity to create discoveries that could change the world — something HAX has been doing around the globe for a dozen years.

“HAX’s vision from the start has been to help founders make the impossible, inevitable,” he told a who’s who crowd of leaders in technology, entrepreneurship, higher education and government. “Its strength is finding ecosystems, where we have the leverage to help make that happen.”

already is doing that in HAX offices in San Francisco, Tokyo and Shenzhen, China.

“These are all areas where there are unique capabilities to really accelerate hardware and the next technologies that will define the future,” Turner said.

Newark is quickly getting up to speed.

HAX has been working with potential entrepreneurs for more than a year while it was building out its permanent space that includes mechanical labs, electronics labs and chemistry labs. Click the link in our bio to read more.

Bamberger’s was once a favored shopping experience for Newark residents. The 500,000-square-foot building was eight stories high and included ten departments and a restaurant. Sitting on the corner of Market and Halsey Streets, the department store was a staple in the downtown area. But over the years, the allure of Bamberger’s shifted. And by 1992 when it closed, it had been renamed Macy’s and was a one-level discount store for the chain.

Bamberger’s decline and ultimate closing was a reflection of Downtown Newark’s demise. A series of events—urban flight, the 1967 rebellion, and the growth of suburban malls—all made shopping in Downtown Newark less desirable. And by 1992, all three department stores that were once anchors for the downtown area—Bamberger’s, Hahne & Company, and Kresge’s—had closed, leaving Downtown Newark filled with big empty vacant spaces.

The groundbreaking of Burlington, a national chain offering discounted brand name clothes and home decor, is set to open in May and signals a long-awaited revival. Burlington’s arrival has been a long-time coming. Various news sources reported the off-price retailer was coming to Downtown Newark as far back as 2017. It was not until 2022 that the Fort Lee-based developers began laying the foundation for the chain to have a presence on Broad Street.
