Randy Balsmeyer founded Big Film Design as a place where motion design meets digital tools. BFD is the successor to Balsmeyer & Everett, Inc., the firm that Randy headed with his wife, Mimi Everett throughout the 1990's. Whereas Balsmeyer & Everett was all-analog (animation, opticals, motion control), BFD is all digital.
My “office” today. 😆

Killers of the Flower Moon — Big Film Design Enormous in runtime, theme, and achievement, Killers of the Flower Moon is a sobering appraisal of America's relationship with Indigenous peoples and yet another artistic zenith for Martin Scorsese and his collaborators.

Big Film Design is proud of another collaboration with Martin Scorsese on title design for Killers of the Flower Moon. BFD’s Creative Director Randy Balsmeyer, has been working with Mr. Scorsese and his editor Thelma Schoonmaker for over 25 years, beginning with Kundun. For Killers, Balsmeyer suggested using the newly invented (2006) Osage language as the first main title, followed by the English version. The film depicts the genocide of the Osage nation by an expanding US in the 1920s. Title design is restrained, but in keeping with the period of the film.

Deep Sky is Big Film Design’s latest collaboration with director Nathaniel Kahn. It was our third project together dealing with the James Webb Space Telescope (Telescope, The Hunt for Planet B). Working in the Imax nearly-square screen format was a new challenge. With the main title, we tried to see how far we could push the limits of what the audience could read on a giant domed screen. With the end credits, we tried to present a lot of information and still show the magnificent images from JWST in a way that highlighted the satellite’s unique silhouette.
BFD’s creative director Randy Balsmeyer worked with Kahn and composer Paul Leonard-Morgan to create a unique end credit sequence that was driven by the music.
Deep Sky opens in Imax theatre worldwide on October 20.

Thought provoking article for those of us in the business of making movies.
Opinion | For movie lovers, there’s a darker side to Netflix ending DVD rentals Sure, the red envelope business was old-fashioned. But what about all the films unavailable to stream?
